You're right. The shield bonuses are too big. And would any adventurer lug around a tower shield?

If we took out the tower, I'd change the bonuses like this.

small wooden shield +1
medium wooden shield +2
small steel shield +3
medium steel shield +4

I could but it is all dependent on the attack bonus of the attackers. I firmly believe the accuracy of the common fighter on a moderately defended target is ~70%

The low based accuracy of the other editions (especially at low levels and ESPECIALLY 4E) made and extreme desire for high stats or powergaming a big thing. If we go back to 50% accuracy where you have to roll 11+ to do anything thing we are going back to the 18 dreaming.


Light Armor AC= 10 + A number equivalent to 1st level STR 10 fighter's Attack + DEX
Medium Armor AC= 10 + A number equivalent to 1st level STR 16 fighter's Attack + DEX - 3
Heavy Armor AC= 10 + A number equivalent to 1st level STR 20 fighter's Attack
