My crazy...OUTRAGEOUS idea for Kobolds!

How do i word this so that i don't in trouble for what i say....?

Let's say that a group of players are getting ready to raid a....purple dragon layer. The know the basic lay out of the layer and they know that the dragon has kobold minions guarding it. But what if the DDN kobolds are different from the classic kobolds. What if when the players raiding the layer and found the kobolds/ they were all purple scaled and had long necks, almost like a miniature humanoid purple dragon?? What if kobolds that served blue dragons had a big horn in the middle of their head, a short neck, and blue scales? What if for every type of dragon, there was a typeof kobold to serve it?

Im not saying that they need get rid of the classic kobold look. There could be fluff for when a tribe of kobolds serve a type of dragon for several generations, the dragon begins to influence the tribe. They begin to change in look and gain a few new powers akin to the dragon they serve?

I know its a crazy idea but it could be fun! What do you guys think?

I love kobolds, but one of the things I love about kobolds is how killable they are. (I once ran a dungeon where one trap involved dropping kobolds on the party from murder holes in the ceiling. Since falling damage was 1d6, half the kobolds died on impact.) I'm not opposed to variants, but they'd need to be similarly slaughterable.

i dont disagree at all. They need to be killable. I just think they should look different and have different powers dependent on the type of dragon they serve.

I say "I think they should be this way" but i have no problem with the way kobolds are now. Just throwing some idea's around

I can totally get behind this idea. In fact, I think it can be expanded to incorporate the rat-like kobolds and the horned dog-face kobolds of their pre-lizard days.

Kobolds are shapechangers that don't realize it. Their shape is determined by their own beliefs as to what they should look like, which in turn are shaped by the expectations of others around them.

Nobody knows what kobolds truly look like. Your grandfather tells you they're little dog-men with horns. Your uncle insists that in his adventuring days, kobolds were rat people. These days, most of them look like lizards, vaguely draconic. Ones met in dragon lairs actually resemble true dragons.

They really were little dog-men, until someone started referring to them as rats, which caused them to start appearing more rat-like. Then some kobold somewhere became convinced that they were the descendants of dragons, and they started to become more draconic... but didn't really look like any particular true dragon because none of them had survived an encounter with one and knew what they really looked like. Occasionally, a band is sufficiently draconic enough that a true dragon might tolerate their presence. That band grows more dragonlike in appearance, because they know what an actual dragon looks like. This of course, only reinforces their belief that they are dragonkin, because why else would they so strongly resemble them?

I love it. I think I've got my first peice of my setting's flavor.

I wish wotc could read this, though the inability to sell a mini for it would probably kill it for them.

glad you think its cool lol. The problem is Even if wizards did see this. they not going to take the time to make a different type of kobold for ever dragon. THEY SHOULD! but they won't

I have one word for you: paint.

Miniatures didn't start out pre-painted, you know.

And now I feel old. :(
