My game...and the corner I painted myself into

I do like the "it's heresy now prove you are not evil angle" for a quest. As for the item being good or bad...I am still 50-50 on it. Since for all prestige classes I use Test-Based Prerequisites as well for my prestige classes, one person suggested since this quest would test the basic requirements for the Paladin Prestige Class...minus the turn undead part (I am not requiring that to be a huge part of the test...if you have it...VERY helpful...if not and do EVERYTHING else great) why not have him recover a lost Holy Avenger? My only hesitation is 1: is that to powerful for him to have...even temporarily. 2: He uses bastardswords...not longswords

I had an idea that the sword is in a keep guarded by a death knight who was a great paladin at one time. The deathknight is cursed by the gods/the church/whoever to guard it in undeath for shirking his duties in life. He hates the sword but cannot destroy or let it out of the keep. I dunno...just an idea for a good item quest. What is your all's thoughts.
Do you have Weapons of Legacy? They have a legacy write up of the holy avenger in the back of that book. Holy avengers do not have to be bastard swords.

A better suggestion from that book might be the legacy swords (type of sword can be switched without problem) Durindana (the saintly) or Exordius (the redeemed) or (for best effect, wielded by the death knight) Merikel (the divided). The first two are longswords as written up in WoL, and the third could be changed from greatsword to longsword.

Merikel has powers based upon the good or evil path the wielder chooses. Exordius is wrote up as the weapon of a death knight that was used to kill a paladin by devouring her soul. Her soul still resides within the sword and the sword becomes intelligent at higher levels. Durindana contains the finger bones of a saint and becomes a holy weapon of light.

I think one of those might work as the quest item.

I want to again thank all of you here. This is why I like our little EN World community. We help each other out. If anyone is ever stopping by the Northern Virginia, Washington DC area and want to hang out or need something....lemme know.

Weapons of Legacy?? Okay...I guess I will thumb through it...on your recomendation. I saw references to in in the new RL remake module. Thanks again for the suggestion.

What do you all think about use test-based prerequisites? I like the idea personally. I been wracking my brain as to what should I have the fighter in question do to become a paladin. Some is easy. He by game mechanics needs this...

Alignment: Lawful good.
BAB:+4.
Skills: Knowledge (religion) 2 ranks, Knowledge (nobility and royalty) 2 ranks, Ride 4 ranks.
Feats: Mounted Combat.
Spellcasting: Ability to cast protection from evil as a divine spell.
Special: Ability to turn undead

The Ride skill and mounted combat...the keep/dungeon/whatever is guarded by the death knights squad of undead cavalry. He has to best their leader to get the key (or something for the gate)

Turn the undead and protection vs. evil. The turn part would be great...cut down and cower the lesser undead to fight the cav leader...not required but nice. The prot vs. evil...I dunno...have another guardian be some kind of BBEG that possesses people. I am a bit hazy on how to test him on it.

Knowledge (religion)...the relic is hidden and having basic knowledge of religion helps find it. Also the initiation ceremoney to follow helps with that. Knowledge (noblity)..the death knight will only fight the fighter and tell him where to find it if he can entertain him with some knowledge of courtly things currently going on....once again another hazy part.

The BAB....c'mon easy one. Can he fight these things.

The alignment....okay...how do you prove you are lawful good? Bring the relic back? "Look he isn't burning up...he must be lawful good" or should I go another route?

Hmm, having a go-along NPC might work, but I am not sure. How would they know the party wouldn't overpower the NPC if it decided to get into mischief, start an evil cult, rob a temple, etc? I think it would work better if the go-along or the temple had something upon the fighter to prevent him from such behavior - a Mark of Justice, perhaps? Or maybe a curst item that only the Bishop or his minion (the NPC) could remove. It would not need to be major - just enough to inconvenience the Fighter most of the time, but with a potential major effect that could occur on command if the commanding one was within a certain distance.

Say something like: Bracers of Steadfast Striking of the _______ Temple

These sacred bracers will only affix themselves to the arms of a character if a cleric of the ______ temple aids in placing them upon the character. Once affixed they grant a +2 sacred bonus to attack and damage rolls.

However, they are charged with a Geas / Quest spell, and each morning they must be blest by a cleric of the ______ temple or the benefit is lost and the penalty of breaking a Quest spell apply (3d6 damage and automatically sickened: -2 to attack rolls, weapon damage rolls, saving rolls, skill checks, and ability checks for 24 hours). If a blessing by a cleric of _____ temple is placed upon the bracers the penalties are removed and the benefits regained. However, the benefits are lost and the penalties are gained also should the character wearing the bracers ever attack a member of the clergy of _____ temple or deface / desecrate any temple or holy item of the _____ temple.

Once put on they cannot be taken off except by the cleric that put them on or a higher ranking member of the _____ temple. Also, there exists a command word that will immediately bring about the penalties (and remove the benefits) of the bracers. This word is usually set shortly before putting the bracers on (and usually out of the hearing range of the one to soon wear them). Only those knowing the command word can make use of this - often the NPC who put them on and a local higher ranking cleric who oversaw the placing of the bracers upon the character's arms. The effects of the use of this command word only work once in any given 24 hour period. The word cannot be used to increase the penalties with additional uses.

If the temple had a control / leash such as this, I can see them allowing the Fighter to leave - supervised. I furthermore would expect the bracers to allow the Bishop to easily scry the fighter.

As for the quest - who says that all holy avengers must be long swords? Perhaps the bastard sword version was a unique creation that was lost, and the Bishop is asking the Fighter to seek it out and return it to the temple. Of course, perhaps the item, after being captured, was corrupted and granted sentience - a NE bastard sword that perhaps can mimic the powers of a Holy Avenger - or has powers the reverse of a holy avenger: an Unholy Avenger, seeking either a paladin to corrupt to its service or a blackguard to aid it in seeking out and slaying the paladins that once used it. It can hide its nature, seeming little more than an enhanced bastard sword (like a holy avenger while not in the hands of a paladin). The bishop knows of this and either wishes to corrupt the Fighter to his service or at least to gain the weapon - so that it can be granted to a more 'worthy' candidate - who would become the bodyguard of the bishop.

Either way, I still think it would work best if the temple / religion at large did not realize that the Fighter had been freed. If the Fighter is later captured, the bishop can either say the Fighter is lying or admit to having released him - and point out the powerful means he had taken to contain the possible menace should his [the bishop's] mercy had been misplaced. That way he could still come across as good - just a little misguided / mistaken due to his 'rosy-hued' vision.

Very true. I am doing the DM metagaming thing. I know my players wouldn't but the NPC's wouldn't know that.

Nyeshet....thank you. That is genius. Now why did I not think of that. This from the DM who throws out cursed treasure. I once had out there an intelligent fingerless gauntlet. It told the players it was good and to find it's fingers to increase it's power. As you add fingers the gauntlet adds more and more nifty powers. Turns out it isn't good or even very nice and the final finger allows it to take over the host completely. Never trust a magic item with a higher Int score then you.

Now here is the big question. I am going to use the bracer thingee with the church sending their person with them. During that time he'll observe the fighter do paladin type things. What constitutes lawful good behavior?

Ideas

It's been quiet here...whats going on?

One question. How does one prove their Lawful Goodness? Better yet the fighter is actually Lawful Neutral...he has been acting more good though. What constitutes a alignment shift?
