What do you set the typical threat CR for them?

Heh... forgot to answer this part earlier!

I have a lot of respect for my players, and I don't like every fight to be a cakewalk. However, I also believe that a campaign world ought to have a certain independence from the pcs (i.e. the guard of the small town is likely a low-level warrior no matter what level the pcs are). So it really depends on the situation.

Last night, for instance, they made their ethereal assault on a powerful Black Academy that had tons of ethereal demon guardians. I used ten glabrezus (CR 13) and a marilith (CR 17) (with a vorpal sword, but she was banished before she got to decapitate anyone, alas). That's about an EL 20 encounter, I suppose.

Sometimes they fight low-level bad guys, sometimes epic-level ones. Prolly averages out to about their level.

I spoke to Lester's player via email last night, whoops! Orbius is only 17th level. (Though he just levelled to 18th, I believe.)
