My Midnight book is coming apart.

The pages are falling out. We haven't even played yet. I have browsed through it a couple of times, that's it.

Anyway, what's a good way to save a book that's coming apart?

(BTW, sorry if this should be in another forum--looked around and couldn't find one more appropriate as far as I could tell)

The first print run of Midnight core books was defective.

Send an email to FFG at greg@fantasyflightgames.com and explain the problem. If you send them the defective copy they will replace it with a good one from the second print run. Unfortunately you will have to pay to ship the defective book to them.

I've had my replacement copy for several months now with absolutely no problems. The original had fallen apart within a week.

I have had the same problem with my Dragonstar Galaxy Guide. and I have heard of a few other people having issues with the binding on FFG's hardbacks. At this point, I have been avoiding FFG hardbacks for that very reason, but they are so good I may have to give 'em another shot soon.

The only defective bindings I know of are the first printing Midnight books. Of course there may be a case here or there as with all books, but I don't believe there is a pattern of brittle bindings on FFG hardcovers as you are suggesting.

There isn't a pattern. Every print run will have a few problem books, weak bindings and what not but it rarely affects every book in the run. I have copies of a LOT of FFG's books and not one of my hardcovers has proven defective in any way and all are first printings and see a lot of use. Now my Silver Age Sentinels had a very loose binding, which was part of the design of the printing, it kept the spines from breaking to quickly. SOme of my FFG books appear to have a similar feature.

Duct tape?

It's ugly, but it works pretty well.

While I wouldn't single out FFG, I have had problems with both DS hardcover books (mostly the Starfarer's Guide, but the Galaxy Guide, is also a bit rickety)

Tis is the single most important reason why there shouldn't be images of half naked women in fantasy books, the bindings can't handle it... *grins*

Seriously, though, FFG is aware of the problem; it was a major discussion (and still is an occassionally recurring discussion) on the Midnight Mail List. Instructions are as follows:

Return to store where obtained from. Communication has been attempted to make retailers aware that this is not the result of bad reading habits and exchanges are expected.

If the retailer won't make the exchange (usually because of an assumption that the buyer broke it through negligance), follow the instructions above (e-mail/send it off to Greg). FFG isn't paying for the book to be shipped to them because they feel the retailer should handle the exchange. Not the best of deals, but considering the hit they took (until they get recompense from the printer for botching the job in the first place), a no-questions-asked policy is fair and adequate.

Indeed! ;)

And yes, FFG will replace your book if the store you got it from doesn't. They replaced mine with no fuss at all. The worst part was being seperated from my beloved Midnight for about a week.

I just took my copy to a professional book binder.. now it is a fully stitched binding and quite tough. Cost about $20 I believe. Which for me was much better than shipping it to another country.
