Level: Sor/Wiz 3
Components: V, S, F
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5ft./2 levels)
Effect: Ray
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Will negates
Spell Resistance: Yes

A black ray springs from your hand. You must succeed at a ranged touch attack to strike a target. The target losses the highest 1d4 spells or spells slots for the day. For each spell/spell slot lost the target takes 5 points of damage.
Focus: A burnt spellbook.

Other then im not happy how its worded. What do you think.

That was my first gut reaction as well... but then I remembered enervation. So 3rd level looks about right here.

The focus is... odd. Doesn't exactly lend itself to a component pouch (unless it is just a piece of a burnt spellbook). Also, the damage might be a bit much. As a 3rd level spell, this is on par with fireball and lit bolt, which do 5d6 (or 6d6) when they are available. This spell has the ability to do more damage (20 vs. 18) *and* cost spell levels. I'd say reduce the damage to 1 or 2 points per lost spell/slot and things will be good.
 

As is this is better than enervation when used against a caster.

Evernation will remove 1 of the highest level spells, and have some other effects that arn't tremendously significant for spell-casters.

Addle will remove the highest 1d4 spells.

I'd:
A) Have it remove each spell from a random spell level generated by 1d4.

B) Increase it to level 6 or so.

Spell level is detemind randomly roll a d10 use the fallowing scale as well as change how the damage works at the same time.

thats just a change that might work (the spell level cant go beond there highest spell level). Then what level do you think the spell is im going for 5 but it might be higher.
 

Hm... only problem with the scale you have is that if you are facing a caster that has only up to level 7 spells, then there is a much higher chance of getting the highest level tagged from your memory. I suppose this is towards the original intent, but I think it would have to be a level or two higher IMO.

Perhaps the focus could be a used or torn scroll.
 




Actually, since you mention the ranged tough attack and Will save together, I would put it at 4th level. It can really hinder a wizard greatly when used, so in that way I think it can cripple that one core class greatly compared to the others, which is why I would put it up another level. Having it up a level helps out the save DC vs. the spell, so in a way it helps. I would imagine there could be higher level versions of the spell w/o the touch attack and perhaps -2 to the save for each level above 4th.

I really like the spell though, and will hope to try it out sometime.
