My party gives away magical items

It's good to see my players join in the talks. And as a DM I really like that they do this. It does help the over all plot and makes things better for them and their friends. :D

This is really quite unusual. I'm fairly certain that my party would kill a beggar if they thought he had a +1 ring of protection on them.

My game is pretty unique though, so I shouldn't really say that. They don't have anyone to interact with, and there are no stores, so they don't even have a choice of selling items. They've found two significant treasure vaults - one at the bottom of a lizardman pyramid, and another in the bottom of a dwarven stronghold. In both cases, there were racks and racks of +1 weapons that they just left behind (they are 12th level), since they knew this stuff wasn't very valuable. They're also filthy rich. They even came across a room that was not terribly large, but was knee-dip filled with gems of all shapes and sizes. It's funny, because they're totally greedly, and filled their pockets (and bags of holding) with all these gems, but they don't have anywhere to use them. Of course, by the time the party makes it back to civilization, they'll be retired.

I would love if my players did this...
Specially when they are all LG/NG (and a CG kinda sellfish but good hearted character who may be the only excusable in certain situations...)
Thanks for the "idea" =P

For our group, it is only minor items that are given away and usually it is potions of healing type magic given for generosity or to influence a deal.

Now, our group has a different sort of problem - they sell around 90% of the magic items they acquire. Recently, they acquired a +3 keen holy greatsword. Now you would think - wow, that's a keeper, since the weapons they had were only +2. Nope. They put it to a vote and decide to sell it off and split the proceeds. They have done so with other highly attractive magic items as well.

Go figure....

My players gave a Staff of the Undead (taken from an enemy cleric) to a hound archon as part of a Lesser Planar Ally spell. Ensuring that such item was properly destroyed was of the archon's best interest (and the party's), so he agreed. Now the party has asked in on the favor, and the archon will be going into Nightfang Spire with them (he will serve for 11 days, as long as they're fighting the good fight).

If Crothian's group was my group, I'd be handing out MASSIVE xp awards. They're effectively putting more faith into their own capacities, so I'd give them about xp bonuses equal to the 1xp/10gp given away, or thereabouts.

I've seen that happen as well. It is fairly reasonable, in the right circumstances. A +3 keen holy greatsword is worth about 50000 gold; they can sell it for 25000, and that's a fairly big pile of cash. They can use it to purchase other items that they need more urgently. IMC, this happened with a very powerful armor which they found; since there were three members of the party in need of a new armor, they decided to sell it for a hefty price, and use the money to craft three decent armors for all of them. The net result was fairly good for the party overall.

WEll, it should be nted that selling of items IMC is rarely done. THere are no magic stores. One might find a few potions or other magical items at a general store, or they can request specific items from a Wizard or articier. The group did trade magical items at one point, but that was on my suggestion.
