Getting lost in fantasy maps
I have been noodling with using Blame! as inspiration, that but fantasy and subterranean. Something like an ancient powerful empire once chained elementals to build and run their empire-spanning city. Then control of the elementals was lost. The elementals that built grew hundreds of feet tall, while elemental servants suddenly saw the inhabitants as a threat to exterminate on sight. The towering elemental builders continued building by instinct and built up and higher covering over the former empire, “burying” the empire’s inhabitants while the servants continued hunting.
Thousands of years later, there is a legend of an artifact, that only a prophesied hero will find, can bring the elemental builders and servants under control again. Inhabitants live in isolated pockets scavenging in the ruins, sending heroes out to look for other survivors. To find a way out from below thousands of new “levels” above them, which the builders keep re-arranging. To find the artifact that will return control over the builders and servants.
