We’ve never had arguments but we’ve had moments where everyone just sat confused about what was going on and looked deploringly at the the DM, “Can you just naughty word draw it?”
Frankly that when we were teens and we harassed our buddy the dm no end when he invariably saw it differently in his minds eye.

What they say about a picture saying a thousand words? Our DM sometimes really has a block against just mapping stuff out. In a way, I’m so over TotM. It has its place but it’s not the be all end all and sometimes you need to draw it out and show where the PCs are and the monsters are.

I'm a fiend for miniatures. I started playing the 1980s and did most of my play in "theater of the mind," sometimes even on the playground at school, and I was deeply envious of people who had lead and pewter miniatures.

I enjoy both, buuut miniatures are very inspirational to me. I dig through my minis boxes, and every miniature that I pick up sparks an adventure in my head.

Ofc after 2020 ALL of my gaming has moved online.. even the in-person friends that I'd game with, they generally will prefer the convenience of playing from home rather than all meeting in someone's house on a weeknight... so my miniatures have not gotten a lot of play in recent years :'(
And yet while I have a bunch of terrain options, my favorite thing to use with my minis is a wet-erase chessex battlemap :D Cuz I can make it "whatever" with imagination and some colored markers.
