I bought this adventure ona lark about a year or so ago while in a mall at St Louis. I fell in love. The adventure has enough traps, encounters, evil and wackiness to be fun and exciting.
I know lots of people hate the Dung Monster but i think it has its merits. Sucha creature on the first level of the dungeon adds a bit to it plus it forces the players intot he lower levels to escape such a beast.
Well in any case, in my campaign i mixed RttToEE with Rappan Athuk. I kept them as sepreate dungeons but put both backstories into the Environment.
To make the game a bit more appealing to my Cthulhu wise players i nixed Tharizdun and replaced him with Nyarlathotep. Orcus has remained Orcus.
The players started out as agents of a Temple dedicated to 3 good gods and made their way to the Hommlet area to re-establish a mission in the frontier.
Well one thing led to another and they ended up at the old Temple of Elemental Evil. they defeated the denizens and found a wardrobe inthe "loot" room and the dumb half-ogre stepped through.
The rest of the aprty seriously thought about leaving him behind as it was a one-way portal.
In the spirit of the game they stepped through in due time with a rescued hostage in tow.
Eventually they enounted the toubled down ruins of the town that must have logically surrouned the muasoleums and they started getting creeped out, particularly after the paladins discovered what those rams head symbols meant.
As the explored further they found the depression of Rappan Athuk.
leaving the rescued hostage (Tiadden) atop the hill with their horses they descended into the bowl. One Paladin and the half ogre immediately descended into the well only to return quickly after seeing the claw gouged stone and getting a whiff of decomposing matter.
Then the party approached the main Mausoleum. They were stumped. The thief could not open the lock and the half-ogre could not bust the door down.
Luckily our most soft spoken player investigated the area and found a key.
Upon entering the mausoleum they were surprised to only find one sarcophagus. For the longest time they tried to finda mechanism to raise the sarcophagus to the ceiling but to no avail. then the theif relaized why there was a rectangular depression inthe ceiling.
needless to say he ran out the double doors.
Eventually the secret door was found and the characters descended inot the foul depths of Rappan Athuk.
So far they have fallen victim to every trap by checking the wrong things or by running ahead of the theif.
They have found the mimic and ran as quickly as possible away from its aweful power...and each knows that they will have to face it again if they ever want to see daylight again (of course they refuse to check out the rat-holes and have no idea of that escape route).
How is everyone else's adventure going?
