My revision of Alignment and Personality, with Social Standing to boot

Hey Raven!

Your take on alignment looks good. It seems like, by adding personality, you've increased the granularity of the mechanics describing personalities. This can be a very helpful thing for an overworked dm- it's like a 3rd alignment axis, making it easier to keep your npcs straight! :)

What are these social feats you speak of? Are they the "personality feats" you mention in your first post?

Also, doesn't allowing more feats for lawful characters kind of throw the alignments out of balance, or are other factors at work here?

[threadjack]Hey RC, there was a recent thread in the General Forum about this very phenomina... a poster {who will remain nameless for now} complained how Enworlder's fought off attempts to change the RAW. While many of the replies were ...umm.. interesting, the one point that struck me was the observation that well written and politely posted House Rules tend to get one or two 'looks good' posts..then rapidly fall off the first page.

Meaning, if you want comments/critizisms on your house rules you need to be either poorly written and/or inflamatory. :eek:

Maybe we should start a Flame war to get people to look at the thread?

Eh, that probably wouldn't work. After all, the Meta-Troll is still alive and kicking..and so far off the original tanget :)

but I digress....[/threadjack]

Honestly I looked more indepth to the social standings than the alignment piece. This is because I play a very loose game when it comes to alignment. A re-read over them shows a much better written explanation of how I always thought they should be anyway.
My biggest problem with alignments in general is that I am first and foremost a CP2020 GM. 'Good' is generally subjective at best, and 'Law' is more about who has the money than morale choices. I think they are good tools to use when type-casting a character, and horrible tools to try to determine 'what would Mikey do'.

At this point, 57 views, one person responds. That is why I don't post more house rules. :\
Well, I don't use alignment and I'm not a fan of having personality be a statistic in any way, shape, or form, so I felt there was nothing worthwhile I could add to the discussion.

But now that you are fishing for responses, you get a bump. Or something. :heh:

It is also part of a fiendish plan to decouple the absolute "level = level of ability" of 3.X. :D

To really do this, I think you need to shed at least a couple of several relationships:

1. The relationship between level and hit dice.

2. The relationship between level and base attack/base saves.

3. The relationship between level and maximum skill ranks.

Good luck! :D I've thought for a while about a skill-based system, where hit points, base attack bonus and base save bonus are all based on skill ranks, but I've had a devil of a time getting the details to work out on the few occasions on which I've fiddled around with it.

RC, I read over the alignement and personality pieces last night..

First off, I am highly impressed with the quality of the writing. These alignment definitions {that are being instated into my game from now on out} are the best guidelines given for both characters and cultures.

As a matter of fact, I am going to go outside my usual abhorance of alignment and add 'Favored Alignment' to my [Race and Culture] project!

{side note for people confused by this part of the post, RC provided me a draft to proof/playtest..so I have a bit more info than what is posted above}
As to the personality stuff.. I have Penumbra's most excellent book but have lacked a group willing to go that in depth on the social side. You implementation is clean and provides a mechanical advantage to playing a particular character type. Some of the conditions may be relatively simple to achieve {fx, the 'Use Aid Another' action in combat or skill} while others alot more complex {schemer.. my favorite character type by the way :)}
This may lead to meta-game choices for character types. Not sure if this is fixable or even a problem

More readig tonight!

Asta.
