D&D 5E My Starter Set Play Experience with New Players (SPOILERS)

That's so awsome, must spread some XP blah blah blah...

I just warped up my starter set game after the third session, we planed to have only one session just to try the game and we had so much fun that we continued for three weeks! But because the DM need to play home last session was our last so we headed to cragmaw castle and proceed to almost TPK (the rogue managed to run away) AND IT WAS AWSOME!

It was so epic, we just kept rolling like demons and nearly made it out alive with Grunden, but we lost the cleric and one bad roll and we got overrun, it's one of the those games you will remember for years. :)

Glad that you guys had fun, keep on playing!

Thanks for your write-up Thaumaturge. It made me laugh.

I want to get my group going on 5E but I am moving this week (I should be packing, heh.) I am also still playing 4E at the moment and don't want to confuse my brain. Hopefully when I am settled in I can run the Starter Set.

Anyway thanks for the inspiring account!

My players (effectively 4 newbies, although a couple had old experience) surprised the goblins at the ambush site by sneaking up along the sides of the road, and then negotiated with one of the lookout goblins to lead a faction uprising. They missed out on Klarg's treasure, but rescued Sildar.

Pretty good for a first session!

About half-way through the night W shook his head and looked at me with wonder. “I can’t believe I’m having fun.”

Ran the first session of the Starter Set for our two kids and a reluctant wife who was brought in to make numbers, she had a very similar reaction and is now also looking forward to the second session this weekend.
Not anywhere near as much as our 7 y.o. it has to be said, but then he was in tears when we couldn't play again last Monday night and that he'd have to wait til the weekend. So it's a high bar to meet.

Awesome stuff! I am hoping to get my wife and some of our friends to give it a go. The wife has never played before, and the friends are familiar with the game but haven't played for years.

I'm not sure which is neater--your wife's response or your 7 year old's. :)

Thaumaturge.

I really hope the reactions of my 5 new players will match yours.
Especially my girlfriend and sister are only playing to do me a favour.

Did you handle your self-declared reluctant player differently from the others?

I could give them cookies to reward them :)
