My SW SAGA house rules

Yes. As carbines, they have a lesser maximum range than rifles. They top out at 150 squares (225 meters) vs. a rifle's 300 squares (450 meters).

It should be noted, though, that they are still well longer range than pistols, which top out at 80 squares (120 meters).

so they have a shorter range mod? or did they completely change the range idea from 3.5 style?

There are different tables for different classes of weapons.

Each class of weapon has a point blank, short, medium, and long range, with appropriate modifiers to the to-hit roll. The limits of each range increment are different for different weapons, though. Point blank range for a pistol is 20 squares, for a rifle it's 30. Etc.

Inaccurate weapons merely cannot fire beyond medium range for their class. Since a carbine is an inaccurate rifle-class weapon, its range stops at 150 squares (the limit of medium range). The 80 square limit I referenced for pistols is due to the limit of its long range being 80 squares.

So while a pistol could shoot at an 80 square distant target at a -10, the carbine and rifle could shoot at a -5 due to the difference in their tables (the increments aren't regular, though, which is why you're probably confused -- they did away with standard range increments in favor of 5 categories on one range table).
