My Warhammer 3E arrived today.

I got it via the Amazon pre order for 37% off.

Initial impressions:

Impressive.

Its not a board game.

It does have a lot of cards and a lot of dice, including extra D10's because the originals were not up to FFG's standards.

Books look nice, but soft cover. I HATE soft cover core rule books. I can handle soft cover supplements, but I much prefer HC core.

Now to actually start reading.

I have yet to play it, plans for that this weekend.

However, as I read it, and note the changes and additions, I think I will end up liking it as long as the fiddly bits (the cards, tokens, many dice, etc...) do not make the pace of the game be a "crawwwwwwllll".

BTW, for those of you wondering, this is most definitely NOT a board game, nor is it a miniatures game. Yes, it has components similar to board games, but they are aimed at facilitating play of your PC.

Let me know how it goes; I'm interested, but not enough to cough up $70-100 for a "maybe".

I did see that the rulebooks are now on DTRPG, as PDFs.

Hmm, maybe someone at DunDraCon will be running a game in Feb.

It does seem like a ridiculously big and heavy and expensive box if all that stuff isn't needed and it's not a boardgame.

I'd rather it WAS a boardgame if it's going to be that mechanically complex to play.

I'm not sure its mechanically complex to play. So far I would say its on par with WH 2E, and the cards, tokens, and such are designed to AID us in game play. Which is why I want to play it before I really say anything about how complex it is, because it might actually play more cleanly than 2E does, if all the "aids" actually aid.

We are hoping to play early Friday, so if that happens I'll be sure to give my thoughts.

I am eager to read your report!

It's neither a boardgame, nor mechanically complex.

The props are there to make the game easier. For example, you have cards for all the actions you can do in combat, the cards are not just a visible reminder, but also contain all the necessary rules to execute the action (i.e. what happens when you roll this number of that symbol and so on).

The jigsaw puzzle pieces are used for various things in the game. Showing whether you are fighting more conservative or more reckless (the Stance system), initiative counter, progress during something similar to 4E Skill Challenges, and so on.

The standups (you can also use miniatures) and some of the markers are used as a combat "map" (actually not a map), it's an abstract system to show relative distances between combatants.

The career and party sheets show game related information, but also contain "sockets" (basically just color-coded fields on the edges) where you can place active cards (talents you are currently using and such).

Also, there are cards to show your wound level (every wound gives you a wound card; for a critical wound, the cards have various critical effects printed on the back), and various other maladies.

So, the stuff in the box is needed to play the game, as it centers around these components.

Yeah, what Thanee said!

Anyways, we created PC's last night, and I would say character creation is just as easy, if not easier, than it is in 2E. The cards being able to be divided up among the classes made talent selection and such go a bit faster, I think. Plus there are only 3 or 4 new concepts to be added, so the complexity doesn't seem to be significantly greater, but it does appear to be greater since there are new things to track, stress, stances, crit effects, etc...

[off-topic]BTW, maybe you should use a smaller font for your sig? It kinda looks like normal text. :D[/off-topic]
