Myers-Briggs and Gamers

Just went through the first sessions of pre-marriage classes (something Catholics or folks marrying Catholics have to go through). The first topic was the Myers-Briggs topology. I had a game right after the session, and found a lot of similarities with the other members of my group in terms of M-B types. So, I was wondering how many people don't fit into what I would expect are the common gamer types.

Brief overview of M-B (skip if you already know them):

There are four axes, and folks can fall anywhere along each axis. The four axes are Extrovert-Introvert (E or I), Sensing-Intuitive (S or N), Thinking-Feeling (T or F), and Perceiving-Judging (P or J). People will frequently list the four letters where they are strongest. I, for example, am an INTJ, or introvert, intuitive, thinking, judging. E-I measures whether or you are energized by interacting with people or spending time alone. S-N measures whether you see things for what they are or attach additional meanings or associations to things. T-F measures your preference for logic and rules vs. emotion and feeling. P-J measures your preference for flexibility and spontenaiety vs. organization and scheduling.

Gamers:

Introverts tend to spend a lot of time thinking things through. They have a denser inner space, so to speak. Intuitives see lots of options, see patterns, and tend toward the imaginative. Thinkers prefer rules, logic, and clear-cut decisions. It seems to me that these are all typical of RPGers, although LARPers might show more extroversion or feeling tendencies. Judgers would probably be better DMs.

Are there any folks here who consider themselves strong extroverts? More emotional than logical? Do you tend to be a senser rather than an intuitive?

My Myers-Briggs typology is INTJ also. None of the gamers in my group are extremely extroverted most are just this side of being introverts. I know one of them said his typology was INFP during an unrelated conversation to gaming.

Yah, I'm INTJ as well. Seems to be a repeating theme in the IRC channels I frequent. As I recall, we had a poll on this some time ago, and there were a couple of types that were overwhelmingly more common. I think INTJ and INTP, but if someone could dig it up, we could verify.

I've taken it four times -- twice in college, the other two times a few years later. The only constant was 'T'. I don't put much stock in it.
Rodrigo has the right idea. In Psychology class, I did a study where I randomised the result I gave to people on the M-B and asked them to rate how well they thought it fit. There was no significant correlation between the number of categories I flipped and their rate of satisfaction (the people who got nothing flipped did come out *barely* on top, but the people to whom I gave opposite results were close behind).

Your score on this thing also depends on which version you take. The long one is "better" in that it asks more question and puts less weight on the word association. I tend to consistently score ENTJ or sometimes ENTP on the long one (J and P are always within 1 and often come to tiebreakers), but I get ENFP on the short one because of all the word-association (I always choose to do the Thinking thing in a question about how I would act, but when asked to choose, I like the word Mercy better than Retribution :p). And knowing myself, F is definitely definitely wrong.

I've taken the test several times...always comes out ENFP. And, the E (extrovert) is always pegged at the far end of the scale.

I'd agree that most of the gamers I know are probably more introverted. :)
