Why not just allow gestalt Cleric-Wizards? It would save a lot of time.

This is not even close in comparison. I think that divine spells -are- the provence of clerics and druids and all of the rest. This class benefits as a caster from the cleric class too.

In first and second edition the concept for hving a mage/priest was pretty easy (if you were a non-human), now its quirky at best (and overpwered at high level).

Oh and hell hound dont forget the gestalt character would have better BAB, saves and skill access.

I think that the niche is needed. You may not. But apparently the people at WoTC think the concept is valid otherwhise they would not have made the MT PrC. You gave the perfect example of a character who could be a MT, the worshiper of Boccob...
