They had a very good reason for the change, because a simultaneous progression would be way overpowered at epic levels.
Why? By epic levels, all you are really getting is caster levels. Improved caster level in vs better bonus feat progression as a straight wizard or cleric? Hardly a major win for the epic MT!

Because they have the *full* spellcasting ability of a 20th+ level cleric *and* a 20th+ level wizard by 25th level (cleric5/wizard5/MT10/eMT5) then, ok -1 caster level (Practiced Spellcaster figured in, of course). The disadvantage of having weaker high level spells is *completely* negated by then.

And as I said above, I think they need more bonus feats in any case (every 4th level sounds about right).

A Clr 3/MT 10/Wiz 7 has 9th level wizard spells. Having access to 9th level cleric spells as well is nice, but it's hardly the same boost in spell power that having some 9th levels as against none is. After all (barring quicken spell), you can still only cast one per round. And 25th level is 8 levels after a single-class cleric or wizard gets his 9th levels spells, by then the single classers will have moved on.

IOW, they don't have anything like the full spellcasting abilitities of a cleric and a wizard. They have a lot fewer feats, and at epic levels, the feats are key.

Of course, the feats are way too few as they are. No epic class should get less than one bonus feat every four levels, I think.

I agree with Thanee, on both accounts.

IMO, they should've continued a slower advancement in both caster level classes. Not alternating cleric and wizard levels, but instead having every third level (or similar, haven't given it that much thought) give both cleric and wizard caster levels. That way, there still is some incentive to continue Epic MT.
