Some changes to the Green Masked Basilisk. But not all I was supposed to make (I's forgetful, I is:)). So if you think there are more changes to be made, drop me a line privately so I can save them for later.

The Greater Plains Basilisk is being delayed once again. Some trouble with the d20 STL Logo. So I'm going to give my mind some rest. As a totally inadequate compensation for the missing beast, I present this preview of the Greater Boreal (Tiger) Basilisk.

Greater Boreal (Tiger) Basilisk Preview

The Greater Boreal (Tiger) Basilisk is the largest of the basilisks. It stands 5 feet at the shoulder, and is some 12 feet in length. Its plumage is a dusky red, with orange/yellow bands, and a fringe of yellow/green tail feathers The male also has a tuft of red feathers at the tip of the tail. Both sexes are of the same size.

Since their prey is largely colorblind, the Tiger Basilisk's color scheme has no effect on their ability to hide.

Of all the basilisks the Tiger Basilisk has the weakest paralyzation ability. (See the Greater Boreal (Tiger) Basilisk stat block for details.) For this reason they tend to be better in combat than other basilisks. They also tend to be more aggressive, sometimes going out of their way to attack humanoids and their animals

The Tiger Basilisk is an animal of the boreal (northern) forests. They have been seen in sub-arctic lands, but such sightings are few and far between. Even rarer are sightings in grassland, though there are stories of a sub-arctic prairie sub-speciecs (more likely misidentification of lone Greater Plains Basilisks of greater than usual size.) They are loners, only coming together for mating.

The females usually have between 2-3 (1d2+1) young, of which one (rarely two) survive to adulthood. The hatchlings are a dusky brown, which phases into the adult plumage as they mature. The "trimming" grows in over the course of time too.

(Stat Stuff)

I'm thinking of making the animal a 8d8 hit dice beast, with a bonus for Con. The paralyzation would have a save DC of 12 (Fort Save of course) with a failed save meaning the victim is at -4 for all actions and moves at half speed. A successful save would mean no effect.Potentially nasty, but nowhere near as bad as being "frozen". Your thoughts on this are welcome.

And as a bonus:

Raven Basilisk

The Raven Basilisk is named thus because of its behavior, not because it actually resembles the winged raven. In appearance the Raven Basilisk is a bit larger than its aerial counterpart and a dark, iridescent green in color.

In behavior the Raven Basilisk is curious, covetous, drawn to shiny things, and possesses a sense of humor. It loves playing tricks, and is quick to learn new ones. Some have the apparent ability to detect magic, and can find magic items among other objects, but this has yet to be put to the test. The animal is also easily tamed and quick to make friends. But its territoriality usually prevents it from accompanying its new companion. Still Animal Friendship and the Improved Familiar Feat work twice as fast as usual. Bonding with a Raven Basilisk will lead it to leave its usual haunts and go with its new partner.

However, a pet Raven Basilisk (even a familiar) is a jealous creature, becoming an insecure animal should it perceive another as being a rival for its owner's affections. It needs constant reassurance.

At the same time, it loves attention. Even wild Raven Basilisks will strut and preen should one comment on the animal. Since the Raven Basilisk cannot understand speech, the why remains a mystery.

***Hope you enjoyed the beasts presented above. They should soon be up at Mythusmage.

While I can't say that I like your crunchy bits, or the use of the green masked one as a familiar, I do enjoy your descriptions and critter mannerisms.

Blacksway: Then I'll have to be sure to mention the Raven Basilisk's taste in carrion.:)

Dragongirl: Thanks for the compliment. BTW, you are welcome to change the stats if you like. Your Green Masked Basilisks need not be the same as my Green Masked Basilisks.
