Naerl’s Solar Trickery. Revised spell; needs looking over.

”Still a little kobold is Naerl? Dragon’s blood counts for nothing does it? I shall show them.” Mused Naerl, as he walked from the mages guild after they had turned him down, “Naerl’ll show them stinking mages.” Naerl took a stand on the podium in the town square and shouted at the top of his still squeaky voice.
”I SHALL EAT THE SUN!”
The townsfolk laughed at the little kobold, him eat the sun?
“Let’s see how well you laugh when yous is in the darks!” And with one incantation he swallowed the sun.

Naerl’s Solar Trickery
Illusion [Glamer]
Level: Wiz/Sor 7, Trickery 7
Components: V, S, M
Casting time: 1 full action
Area: 4 mile radius centred on caster
Duration: Up to 24 hours (D)
Saving throw: Will (Disbelief)
Spell resistance: No

This spell creates the image of whichever time frame the caster chooses, a specific time isn’t required though. With this spell the caster can paint the image of any celestial scene they choose, and rearrange the stars if a night scene is created. All those within 4 mile radius see this image in the sky, if you are in sight of the edges the spell you see the darkness or lightness fade to the actual sky scene. If creatures study the sky for 30 minutes using an astrological text, this allows for a will save. Even sightless creatures are given the impression of a sudden change in time. This spell is not designed to mimic weather, and cannot do so.

Material: A dragons tooth weighing at least 1 pound

I made the range larger, it didn't seem quite enough, even so I lowered the level. How is it now? Also just clarified some things.

Now I've changed the duration from 1 hour/level to Up to 24 hours. What do you guys think about the material component.

p.s I wrote the flavour text before the movies came out. :heh:

Does nothing, eh?

One word: Sunlight Weakness. This spell brings out the undead (or drives them away) in DROVES. Or it should, if you feel it needs an actual effect in addition to the image.

Ok then, it does something, but apart from that and some confusion, I can't see it hurting anyone or giving many bonuses. Which is kind of what I meant.

Would it make sense for it to not change the light areas, just the sky... Nah, I don't like that. What stoping zombies or wraiths crawling around in the light? Also undead shouldn't be able to be effected by illusion, are they?

Still, for what it does, level nine?

No. You can do this exact same thing with a Programmed Image, or for that matter a Silent Image, Minor Image, Major Image, or pratically any other visual illusion spell. Heres some suggestions that would make it worth level 9.

If this spell is used to hide the sun, 1d4 HD of undead per caster level come forth. These undead are not under the control of the caster, but have an intial attitude of Helpful.

If this spell is used to brighten sunlight or create a similar effect, creatures with sunlight vulnerability have penalties tripled, and may only take a move action in a round (or less if their existing sunlight vulernability is worse).

This spell may be used to create a disk of force through which the caster may focus light spells (Sunburst, et al). Such spells are treated as though intesified, doing twice the maximum damage, but are turned into rays and may only affect one target. Such spells focused through the lens of force may not have any metamagic feats applied.

The range is far greater, I wouldn't let the spell change the entire sky and the terrain to mimic the time said.

All I want it for is to do is change what the sky and the light levels do on the ground. Not summon up undead or fry drow!

Okay, I'd say 6th level, then. Pretty nice high level illusion spell, but generally at really high levels illusions aren't all that useful.

Thanks, I can see it being that powerful..... I was aiming for a very high level illusion spell, mgiht have blinded my judgement. I'll change it but if anyone else wants to pitch in with there thoughts (where a simple agreement or disagreement) be my guest.

For level 9 I would make the following changes:

Area: 25 miles (basically enough to cover a large medievel city or a few towns, 1 mile would mean everyone in a small concentrated village might see it.)
Duration: up to 3 days (for a level 9 spell that consumes a tooth of a dragon it should last some time. Maybe cap it at one day but a given caster who can cast 9th level spells will always be caster level 17-20 (or higher if you continue into epic). Thus keying duration is kinda silly since it will almost always be the same amount of time).

Neat spell, thats one hell of a bat signal! :)
