D&D 5E Name level heroes for 5e

A slight derail (please forgive me),

Years ago I had a player in 3e who created a name level for every level of his barbarian - he started first level as "Krug the Non-threatening", I think at 2nd level he hit something like "Krug the Mildly Irritating" - all the way up to 20th level with some amazing title like "slayer of gods".

Meaningful choices and/or really fun random follower tables.

By "meaningful choices" I mean giving the player some say in what "name level" means for their character & making the choice to have strongholds/followers relevant in your game. The Rules Cyclopedia has some examples of this in the fighter class IIRC. For some it will be followers, for others strongholds, for others still both, and a few are likely to reject all of that and wonder "well, what do I get?"

Possible answers might be: nothing/freedom from feudal responsibilities (only appropriate in some campaigns), a reputation that grants social benefits in some settlements, a 10% XP bonus for accomplishing quests, a magic item that gains power as you do, a second subclass choice, or a charm/blessing/epic boon from DMG.

I like the idea of granting epic boons.

Also note that they will still gain class features, but epic boons as an extra could tempt them.

However as above im thinking about running it in a west marches campaign, so if the other players decide to go on a low level campaign, it could grow boring for them.

Hi krachek. Im not referrimg to that.

1e had a level youd reach they called "name level" where youd made a name for yourself. At that pevel you basically stopped getting hp and started getting followers and xluld build a stronghold etc. So im thinking forward about the supplement and things i could integrate into that

Sorry,
So my answer to the right question is tier 3. So level 9+ more or less.
At level 6 I see a captain.
At level 9+ would be the entrance of a Name.
But I would not made it automatic.
The player has to work for its Name and Renown.

it can make a really interesting game.
because pc don’t has problems to win their fights, but win with Honnor and Renown is another game.

Forgot to post this earlier, and it may not be useful with Matt Colville's kickstarter book, but there are some neat fan-made followers charts on Reddit.

I really like this idea! Using honour and renown as player stats could be great for this campaign. "Yes, you could chase down that gold hoarding but piecful dragon, but itd really boost your renown as an honourable lord in the region if youd rid the northern villages of those pesky bugbears!....sir"

There is a basic honor rules in the Dm guide. But I think it need more work.

There is others concepts crucial for leadship interaction.
We have Honor for how trustable you are perceived.
But if we add two more scores:
Renown for how efficient your are perceived.
Frightening for how threatening you are perceived.
We can manage many more characters.

A pirate captain may be frightening but with poor renown, and no honor.
A gentleman rogue may have great honor and renown.

Very cool! This is awesome.

I’m thinking renown can be gained by actions based on class... fighter=defeat a foe above you In power. Wizard=research or find a lost and unique spell... etc. Or renown is gained by just doing awesome stuff.

As you level, renown requires more effort. You can’t just keep stomping on orcs all day.

Maybe renown should work like XP... use the same table. Each character has an actual XP total and a renown XP total. Renown XP is gained from completion of world changing quests, not mundane treasure hunting and monster killing.

Renown level is what matters when getting to name level. A character who has killed with reckless abandon may have gained a lot of levels, but gained very little renown XP. Whereas a character who has killed few creatures but succeeded at some great task may have the renown XP to inspire rulership, even if they lack raw power.

I prefer titles to tied to story rather than level. By story I mean in world achievements, relationship to one's background, and honour/reputation etc. I can imaging a low level PC having a grand title, ala a Prince Joffrey type.
