Since in those days most folks were illiterate, didn't they just call a name by the picture they hung out front? So [Adjective] [Noun] would probably be the easiest fit.

That would make sense as well.

Not in my case. At least, not directly: I've never heard of The Prancing Pony.

Lord of the Rings, Fellowship of the Ring. It's an inn in Bree, where the hobbits stayed briefly. As I recall it had a chapter title named after it, which is probably one of the main reasons it is remembered.

The Red Dwarf (I crap you not)

I'm so tempted to use that. I know two of my players would get it at least. (For those that are unfortunate enough not to know, Red Dwarf was a great british comedy set in space.)

When I went to England several years ago I found lots of pubs with fun names. Two of my favorites of were: The Birds and the Bees and the The Dog and Gun.

I used to play a dwarven fighter who opened a tavern called The Dead Orc Cafe. The entire front of the bar was "bricked" with orc kneecaps (he'd spent years amassing a collection). Very popular place with dwarves. :D

I'm working on a product now, in both hardcover and .pdf format, that provides an extensive list of taveran and bar names. Here's a sample:

Bob's
Frank's
Ale & Spirits
The Filthy Mug
Cheers
Al's
Harry's
Frank's
The Jaundiced Unicorn
Beer
More Beer
Harriet's
Frank's
On The House
No Orcs Allowed
No Dwarves Allowed
Spirits & Ale & Stuff
Girls Girls Girls
Frank's

The book contains dozens more like that, provided by at least one other up-and-coming creative mind in the RPG supplement industry. And with exquisitely detailed page numbers, the product is a bargain at only $39.95.

More details to follow. Now accepting pre-pre-orders.

One of favorites (and the one that will probably win the "groaner" award) is "The Come On Inn"

Others I've used:
The Drunken Sailor (Easy to find, just look for the drunken sailors out front)
The Hack & Slash
Ovid's Used Drink Emporium (Don't ask, I implore you)
Drinks (A play on the ever popular Eats)
The Dive
Glenda's Hangover Hut
The Pissed Elf
The Hangout (The sign looked similar to the Coppertone ad with the dog pulling down the kids pants)
The Dead Jester (Skeleton with a Jester's Cap on the sign)
The Bread & Ale
The Bent Wench
Mr Hunky's Fabulous Pad (The owner was just a *little* off)
The Bottlezone (The sign had the A in Battlezone crossed out and an O painted above - former adventurer's guild hall)

For DnD there has always been The C*ck-eyed Cockatrice. (Remember, Eric's Grandmother)

In Cyberpunk, one of the central locations in our game was a topless club just south of downtown Night City called Velvet Dreams. The proprieter, with a handle that Eric's grandmother would not approve of, was a local job broker that hired the team for many jobs till things got a little too rough.

Since all of my Star Wars campaigns take place in the same universe they all contain "The Smiling Bantha".

Others, mostly from D&D campaigns, include:

The Silver Shield
Dirty Dag's Tavern
The Welcome Inn
The Come On Inn and Rest (Local family-type place in front, high class brothel in back)
