Nar demonbinder oddities

The Nar demonbinder is a PrC that grants spontaneous Cha-based
spellcasting, specializes in dealing with demons, has a potent Cha-based
special ability...

... and requires 10 ranks in knowledge (the planes), which is a cross
class skill for sorcerers!

Also, most of the "sign" abilities seem quite pointless.

Iron sign serves as a calling diagram, which is nice. You can also use
it to trap a free outsider as if you had called it with a full-round
action, which can be really great.

Brazen sign works "exaclty like the iron sign, except that the called
creature cannot use its spell resistance". But a calling diagram already
prevents the use of SR to escape the binding.

Silver sign works "just like the brazen sign, except that the DC of the
Charisma check for the called creature to escape increases by +5", which
sounds nice, but is basically unnecessary, unless you're in the habit of
calling Cha 30+ creatures, "and none of its attacks or abilities can
exit the area within 5 feet of the token." A calling diagram already
prevets the creature from attacking those outside it.

Has planar binding changed significantly with the 3.0 to 3.5 change?
Perhaps the no SR, no attacks outside the diagram thing was only added
in 3.5, and that's why the demonbinder has it as a special ability?

A shame really; I just hate getting useless abilities. In a way, it's
worse than getting nothing at that level.

Does anyone else feel it should be somewhat more sorcerer-friendly, and
that the brazen and silver signs should be changed so they actually
grant some meaningful bonus... after all, a Nar demonbinder takes quite
a hit in raw spellcasting power in return for his demonbinding
specialization.

Otherwise, it's quite an interesting PrC to combine with a bard, despite
the text stating that "bards and druids don't have access to the spells
necessary" (wrongly, since you need 4th-level spells and knowledge of
one summon monster, which is no problem for a bard). I'm imagining a
drow girl, ostracized for being too flighty to become a priestess (Wis
is a bard's dump stat, after all), who discoveres the secrets of old
Narfell and comes back to her home town with more demons at her beck and
call than many clerics...

it's my understanding that Nar Demonbinder is one of the more over-powered PrCs along with Ur-Priest (although I could be mistaken, it didn't look too rediclous to me when I looked at it but it features prominently in many builds over at wizard Character Optimization forums).

You could always house-rule that Knowledge (The Planes) is a class skill for sorcerors if you wanted (the skill makes sense as a PrC requirement IMO) or take the Educated feat (I believe that's what it's called) to make it a class skill for all your classes.

The answer to that lies in the answer to two other questions, I think. Do you think planar binding spells are overpowered? Do you think you should be able to apply "+1 level of existing class" to spellcasting gained from a PrC?

The Nar demonbinder is really really good at planar binding. And planar binding could be abused as it is, so once you're even better at it...

The other, even greater problem is that the demonbinder grants its own spellcasting, spell level 4th-8th over 7 PrC levels, which kind of tacks on to your previous spellcasting. So you could probably pull of some suspicious tricks by applying your mystic theurge "+1 level of existing arcane class" to it. Although no particularly good build immediately comes to mind... could you post some details (or URLs) about the build that use the PrC?

IMO, if you disallow such mystic theurge shenanigans and if you don't allow planar binding to be milked to the utmost of its abusive potential, Nar demonbinder's fine.

Actually, it seemed fine until I noticed how useless the brazen sign and silver sign abilities are. Now it's still a really cool twist for the bard, but not really worth it for a sorcerer or wizard: since the specials aren't really needed for a successful planar binder, it's probably not worth it to hinder your spellcasting so (while the Nar demonbinder eventually gets 8th-level spells, the spell list is terribly limited).

it would seem that Nar Demonbinder only rears its head in builds like Bard 9/ Ur Priest 2/ Nar Demonbinder 1/ Mystic Theurge 8 over at http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=339 <-- the "Character Optimization" board at wizards.

I thought I'd seen it around in a lot of spellcaster builds, but I must have been remembering incorrectly. It's probably only particularly powerful when combined with Ur Priest and Mystic Theurge.
