natural 1's and 20's

First Post
One of our players plays with another group on Sunday's and he came to our game with the belief that there are no automatic successes and failures on saving throws, because they could not find it in the core books. I could have sworn it was in the core books but could not find it. The only reference I could find was in the WOT FAQ.

Is the reference in the core books? If so where. Or do I just give him a copy of the FAQ to take to his Sunday game?

From the 3.5 SRD...

"Automatic Misses and Hits: A natural 1 (the d20 comes up 1) on an attack roll is always a miss. A natural 20 (the d20 comes up 20) is always a hit. A natural 20 is also a threat—a possible critical hit."

"Automatic Failures and Successes: A natural 1 (the d20 comes up 1) on a saving throw is always a failure (and may cause damage to exposed items; see Items Surviving after a Saving Throw). A natural 20 (the d20 comes up 20) is always a success."

For 3.0, I don't have the exact references, but 1's and 20's for attack rolls should be in the PH, but 1's and 20's for saving throws wasn't specifically mentioned until Deities and Demigods.

SAVING THROWS
Generally, when you are subject to an unusual or magical attack, you get a saving throw to avoid or reduce the effect. [...]

This would be in the Combat chapter of the Player's Handbook.

Yeah, in the 3.5 PH, it's page 134 for attacks and page 136 for saves.

EDIT: Also, automatic hits and misses for attacks in the 3.0 PH is on page 123.
