I'm surprised no one has suggested psychic warrior or wilder... especially wilder. However, combining psychic warrior with feral template could be quite devastating.

FTR, feral is perhaps the most undercosted template for purposes of level adjustment. If you ever do get the chance to play this guy, make sure you have your dm look the template over so that he isn't given a nasty surprise when you turn out to be substantially more powerful than most characters of your ECL.

Feral gets a bit more manageable when you rule that all references to hit dice in the template's descriptive text refer to racial hit dice only, not class levels. That still makes it a strong LA+1 choice. I prefer Mineral Warrior, myself.

Clearly, clearly...but I was thinking more arcane/divine than psi...partly because of how unpopular psi seems to be in some quarters, partly because martial arcanists are always a bit of a (fun) challenge to play.

PsyWars have many powers and abilities that work for this kind of build.

Most arcanists, though, don't, so it's a bit more of a (fun) challenge. Even your average divine caster doesn't have the same array of nasty close range powers that work for this kind of build.

For fairness, if you're going to use the Feral template, choose the NPC Expert as your base class. It'll all balance out =).
