The tailings from mining operations can leech toxic substances such as arsenic into water (poisonous water). The leeching can be the result of sulphur in the mined rock, when exposed to water and air, becoming sulphuric acid, so acidic pools would not be out of the question. Hope the party brought spare boots...

It also depends on the mine, heavy metals could have some ill effects but you could use 'taint' from UA.
