moderator note
I don't think that there is any insinuation of the kind there, certainly nothing for you to take insult to.

You're absolutely right - somebody implicitly stating that only ABNORMAL people would have any interest in the cover with the swastika on it isn't at all offensive and getting offended by such a statement is a great example of putting words in somebody's mouth. You know, even though they said that exact thing.

Good point!

He could move the whole eagle assembly to the bottom of the cover, so that only half of the swastika is depicted.

I could, but not without throwing off the cover's balance and diminishing its intended impact (which is not, by the way, to whip neo-conservatives into a frenzy). The swastika, along with the Russian hammer and sickle, has been a common fixture of cover art on espionage novels for more than three decades (in fact the cover of Schattenjager was inspired by an earlier cover for Night of the Fox and the cover of The Eagle Has Flown by Jack Higgins).

Frankly, anybody so grievously offended by the appearance of a swastika on the cover of a World War II era espionage game set in Germany isn't part of the target audience (composed, as noted in the first post, of my players) for said game, and so it won't be re-designed to make them happy. No doubt such people would likely have a stroke when they discovered that the game actually had Nazis in it.

[Edit: Note that Schattenjager PCs are not Nazis, but rather Allied agents operating in Nazi Germany.]

Keep in mind that, e.g., in Germany, you'd be put on trial for that cover. Different countries, different customs ;).

Fair enough - although I'm not sure that excuses ad hominem attacks on a message board about people who show an interest in the second cover being abnormal. At any rate, I've yanked the pics as Plane Sailing has made it clear that such remarks are perfectly acceptable here and that being offended by them is not. Silly me.

Oh, this wasn't the purpose of my post, as I know that, in the US, the use of the swastika is much more liberally handled. I'd most probably also be upset about this "normal people" remark for a moment. But then I'd remember that this is a pretty international board with people from many different backgrounds, and that there's always the possibility that the poster comes from a country where even putting the swastika on a historical model railway is a criminal offense. Just take it easy :).

Well if I would be able to see those images I would be offended by them for sure. Overall Europeans are very sensitive to this kind of symbols of that certain time. So, thanks for the respect and thanks that you removed those pictures.

Oh, I know that - I don't begrude you. You made a good point...

...which is the primary reason that I pulled the pics. The position that you've taken was actually something like the approach that I expected moderation to take when I reported the "normal people" statement (I reported it, as I found it offensive). I was honestly blown away when, instead, Plane Sailing took time to justify the "normal people" ad-hominem attack as being appropriate and then chastized me for daring to be offended by it.

Just take it easy :).

I plan on it, but I also wanted to voice my discontent with moderation's decision to actually justify a blatant ad-hominem attack while simultaneously issuing a warning to somebody for being offended by said attack. That is just plan messed up, AFAIAC :(

That was a good point, and I'm embarrassed that I didn't think about it before Turjan said something. My intent was not to offend, but since it did offend somebody, I thought it best to remove the images.

So, thanks for the respect and thanks that you removed those pictures.

No problem.

You should email the moderator about this point :).

Soory. I'm unfamiliar with protocol here, as I'm fairly new to these forums (as a regular poster). But you're right - that's probably the proper way to address this. I apologize for dragging this thread way off-topic with my disgruntled response to the decision on question. I'll appeal it to Plane Sailing, along with a request to have this thread deleted.

Thread closed, sort of per request of OP, and sort of because by this last post I was going to close it anyway. I'm leery of deleting threads. jdrakeh, if ever you have a problem with a moderator's decision, there are two ways of dealing with it:
1) Continue making sarcastic comments on the boards voicing your displeasure, and get warned for it, and get your threads locked; or
2) The correct way, i.e., email a mod (any mod) to voice your displeasure in private.

Daniel
