Need adventure ideas for low levels...

Ok. I just started my campaign, and the characters are 2nd level. I need some more ideas for adventures. Currently, they are stuck on a world far from their own (anyone seen Stargate? they went thru one of those), and are on "probation" until the church of the pantheon decides what to do with them (read the norse section in D&Dg, there are priests of the pantheon, in my world, they rule it). The priests are going to ask them to do something, but i cant think of what. at later levels, i know what im going to do, but i need to do something to GET them there. im thinking of some sort off test, for the gods to see how good they are. any ideas?

I'd suggest a test that seems simple, yet is much more complex from a roleplaying perspective. Example: the PCs are asked to retrieve a lost book (of minor religious importance) from some ruins. After defeating the monsters inhabiting the area, they come to where the book is located- only to find that the book is in the possession of a hermit living in the ruins. The hermit has no intention of giving the book to the PCs- at least not for free. Do the PCs:

  • Kill the hermit, and take the book?
  • Barter for it, perhaps giving up a good deal of gold or a cherished magic item?
  • Return to the church empty-handed?

Depending on their actions, they can prove their worth to the church. Upon returning, they will find that this was actually a test of their moral fiber- the hermit was an illusion concocted by the priesthood. How they handle the situation, which appears to be a minor encounter, could have a significant impact on their standing with the church (for example, if they killed the hermit). To make the encounter more interesting, you could play the hermit as being extremely obnoxious (yet non-violent). :D
