Need Advice on "Return of the King" game

Chain Lightning

First Post
Hello there.

Just bought the "Return of the King" game on X-Box. I played "The Two Towers" game on Playstation and loved it. So I picked up the sequel.

Anyways, I'm going through it and I'm running into snags already! In "The Two Towers" game I didn't run into hopeless situations until Helm's Deep. But on RotK I'm already helpless.

I'm stuck on "The walls of Minas Tirith", which is the 3rd location for the Gandalf path. It consists mostly of kicking ladders off the walls as they come up. I see there's some other things to it as well. The Nazgul on its Fell Beast is targetable if I'm in a high view. But I never seem to have a good line of sight on it. Plus I don't want to take the time to stop and climb long stairs to go engage it. Another odd thing is....I can swing down to a ledge beneath the top of the walkway wall....but I don't know what I'm suppose to do there.

Also, once the Orc Siege tower gets pushed into place by the Trolls....I guess I'm suppose to command the catapults to fire at it until destroyed. Will that finish the level? What do I do to finish this level. How do I survive till the end? How do I keep the game from telling me I lost the fight? At first I thought it was by just not letting the over-run meter build. But one time it said I lost even though the over-run meter was still at 3/4th. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Any advice you can give would be great. In the meantime....I want to yell at the Minas Tirith fighters for failing to have the skill to kick down ladders.:)

Shamelessly ripped from ign.com's faq on RotK, because I don't own it yet.

"The main objective of this level is to kick down all the ladders with the O
button, and keep the fortress from being overrun. Look at the meter in the
upper-right hand corner. This is crucial. The line thingy is a layout of the
level. Whenever a bright red dot appears, it indicates that a ladder has
appeared there. The circle meter on the right is the overrun meter. You must
not let this meter fill. The trick is to ignore the enemies, and go straight
to kicking down the ladders whenever one appears. Always remember to keep
moving on this level.

Soon you will see a cutscene with trolls pushing huge
towers towards the castle. Stop whatever you are doing and go straight towards
the large blue dot on the map, and you'll see stairs. Climb up the stairs and
you'll see a catapult. Press R1 while over the blue circle. Wait for the
catapult to load, and press it again. That tower is now destroyed, but another
one is coming on the right side of the level. Run down the stairs and towards
the large, blinking, red dot on the right of your map. Make sure to kick down
ladders on the way. When you get to the right side of the level, take out the
approaching tower with your ranged attack. Once the tower falls, another one
is approaching on the left. Run back to the catapult, kicking any ladders on
the way. Launch the catapult. Suddenly a Fell Beast attacks. Shoot it a few
times with your ranged attack, and it will fall into the castle. Launch the
catapult one more time, and then run down the stairs.

A tower will automatically dock on the right side of the castle, but rubble
obstructs your path. Kick down the ladder (if there is one) and press R1 to
climb down on the ledge. Continue where you're supposed to go, until you are
able to climb back up (there may be a ladder you have to kick first). Once back
up on the main walkway, run towards the docked tower. Hit it with your ranged
attack until it falls. You will be shown a cutscene showing several cave trolls
ramming the main gate. Once back in control of Gandalf, run to your left. Run
up the tower you haven't climbed before. At the top is seven elfstones.
Run back down to the main walkway, and you will see an opening that used to be
guarded by two soldiers. Run through the opening and down the steps. Follow
in the same direction as the running soldiers, and soon you will be in the
courtyard. The level is finished."

Thanks so much for finding this Goobermunch! :)

This will help a lot. Its kinda what I thought I had to do.....but the tips help define the actions more. The weird thing about this level is the little map on the upper right hand side. The one where little red dots appear when ladders appear. Well, that map looks nothing like the actual level from the top view. Or if it is....it's facing the wrong way or something. Its really weird. It really throws off your sense of where you need to be next.

But now I'm armed with new info. I'll give the level another try. Thanks again so much!

Gamefaqs Is easily the best place to look for help on games. There are walkthroughs and codes for pretty much any game you can think of.

I find that googling "[titlename] walkthrough" will find me what I need every time. Often it's at gamefaqs.com, sometimes it's elsewhere.
