Need Campaign World suggestions

MIDNIGHT!

Okay, so it is dark, and unconventional, but like Nightfall said "what's wrong with being unconventional." Really, though I couldn't resist placing a vote for Midnight in a Campaign World thread.

Seconded. :)

Very unconventional, yet still the best setting on the market bar none.

Scarred Lands! :) And just what's wrong with being unconventional? ;) Or better still, Arcana Unearthed! If they aren't newbies, this is definately something for them. (Especially if they've done D&D for a while.)

Well it like this. I have a very conservative group that I am just now getting to enjoy the story and not just straight combat. Second while I have DMed since 1980, it has been for groups that enjoy combat heavy/story light (with some roleplaying) campaigns and my skills at presenting a detailed world are still quite bad. I can make a nice story line and keep them interested in the over all arch but have problems with getting the feel of the world and NPC's over to them.

As for as novel support, must of us don't have time to read nor enjoy the standard fantasy novel. Our taste run to David Weber, and SF writers like John Bring. We are not a conventional group in may ways.

I don't think Scarred Lnds is all that unconventional. I mean it's swords, sorcery, elves, Dwarves, good and evil same as any other D&D game.

But it's execution is sublime. It also handily meets your "well supported by more than adventures" requirement.

I love Scarred Lands.

Keep your eyes particularly peeled for...

  • Hollowfaust (a city ruled by Necromancers that are about as scary, eldritch and evil as the Fargo North Dakota City Housing Commission. Awesome take on a standard D&D trope) Best product in the line, and my favorite RPG product in any line from last year.
  • Shelzar: city of sin (Excellent take on (I assume) Constantinople during the time of the Crusades. I might be way off here)
  • Hornsaw: forest of Blood (Dynamite treatment of an inahbited forest. Not the usual, fruity elves and Druids you'd expect...though honestly the suffix "Forest of Blood" could well have altered your expectations)
  • Burok Torn: City Under Siege (Dwarves on the defensive. Wonderful treatment of a Dwarvish society as it is often described, but seldom actually portrayed: Reclusive, paranoid and martial)
  • Mithril: City of the Golem (Good supplemt describing a city ruled by Paladins. Interesting as it shows that LG rulers do not necessarily equal a paradise, and that there is alot more room for divisiveness amongst Paladins than one might htink in this situation).

There are only a couple of products that I would avoid...The Penumbral Pentagon and Vigil Watch: Warrens of the Ratmen come to mind.

But otherwise, this is all top notch stuff.

Scarred Lands is devoloped and supported, it moves to more fantasy elements than FR (the happy meal setting) and has good thought behind it.

Midnight is very good, evil rules the land and the players are just hanging on.

The one I keep holding out for is the Iron Kingdoms, soon very soon, but you can get a lot of info from Lock & Load.

Here lies my problem with the Scarred Lands. I am not a skilled enough story DM to convey the feeling of any thing but the most traditional medieval type setting. My group (after 10 years is just now developing an interests in the wider story lines) so I have not developed the skills needed to run such world with out messing every thing up.

I as a DM I will admit my short comings, and this is one of my two biggest ones.

I have run/played SL, Oathbound and have run Midnight. I like Midnight the best, by far; but SL is more ordinary than you think, just a little few twists and turns. I would do SL if you want somewhat conventional....

BTW, Nightfall, what happened to your sig, it is like way shorter than it has been...

Garmorn,

There are ways to teach old dogs new tricks. And Scarred Lands can ease this pain introducing new elements in an interesting way.

For now, just check free adventure Serpent Amphora for fun contests, some hack'n'slash and interesting way of making the players work for an evil god and greater good at the same time.

Even if you don't convert to Scarn, you can still convert the adventure according to your tastes.

Regards,
Ruemere
