Agreed. A text editor is the only true HTML editor. WYSIWYG is just... bad. They universally produce bloated, illegible files that are absolute hell, and you're going to need to dig into them at some point because a WYSIWYG editor just can't do everything you need to do.

Well, I've been a professional web developer for, oh, pretty much 14 years now. I've used every version of Dreamweaver since 1.2 and it has been pretty fantastic for everything to do with creating pages and managing a site (e.g. checking stuff across 7000 pages, excluding database driven pages).

Frontpage gave wysiwyg editors a bad name, and always was atrocious. DW has always done a great job of not introducing bloat, and only giving you the code you want. The database add-ons are not the most efficient code you could write by hand, but simply from a maintenance point of view keeping everything in the dev tool makes it much easier for maintenance and enhancements to be done by anyone in the team.

Dreamweaver is going out of the picture now because our site is moving to (gags) Sharepoint Server 2007, so all our future development is in the asp.net/c# space. I still plan to use Dreamweaver for most of my hobby/independent development though because it is faster, easier and more reliable than coding everything by hand in notepad.

There is a good reason why Dreamweaver had 90% of the professional developer market at the time when the majority of web development work was HTML/ASP/PHP. Of course the picture is a much wider one now...

Cheers
