Need help dealing with a melee character in a predominately ranged combat setting...

Out of interest, what kind of campaign are you planning to run? In cramped quarters (industrial spaceships, city streets, etc.) melee is still viable.
If the player flat our refuses to carry a ranged weapon and decides to, metaphorically, try a D-Day landing by running towards the defenders with a sword then its time to make a new character. DS is space opera and I would not bend the setting out of what it (and you) wants to be just to safe a player from his own stupidity.

It's a problem that quickly tends to solve itself:
Simple Darwinism will ensure that the player will eventually create a character that is able to survive (or leave the group).

Mayhaps he wants to be John Preston from Equilibrium http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0238380/ .

Basically the main character, John Preston, essentially a member of a paladin order, knows some sort of gun-fu, and cannot really be shot by bullets as he sees the patterns using his gun-fu.

The difference is that these paladin order guys use guns and melee attacks.

Make his two handed sword also be a gun that can switch back and forth.

FarScape had this:
