... as it stands the only DS published characters that can go into melee effectively is a CR 30 yaun-ti with a hugely modified scimitar or power armor using special forces favored by the emporer.

Wait, you mean that the party is fighting against the emperor?

Oh Lode!

They need to figure out which way the wind is blowing and get on the winning side.

;)

He could always use a Tower Shield while closing through range, and then drop it once he can engage.

Some kind of hyper movement capability would be good. Since the player has already rejected flying stuff, is there some kind of technomagic teleporter thing or dimension door stuff?

Outside the Box Ideas

How about a "cursed ring of teleportation."

He puts on the ring. It melts to his finger (so no one else can use it.) and it teleports him to where he needs to go (once a day).

Then always have a "head of archery" or captain of the baddies in hand so when he decides to teleport to the ranged people ... boom! ... a melee encounter.

Otherwise I'd go with speed/invisibility ... stuff ...

No, no ,no !!! The party has a dragon (ala Dragon mag), so we're working for his father. No one in the group is crazy enough to try mezzenbone...

Well if the guy insists on playing Sub-Optimal Man! Symbol of all that is manly and stupid! Then there isn't really a lot you can do to save him. He has good options and just flat refuses to use them? In a Gestalt game? How many points can one guy dodge?

As a last gasp, just him some boots of speed and make one class Ninja. Then he can run up on people while incorporeal and phase back in when it's time to cut them down. Or just let him take some class/race/magic item that gives him fire/electricity immunity. Won't one of the outsider templates do that? Half-fiend or 1/2-Celestial or 1/2 Ranma?
