Need help finding a name for an Archetype

I'm looking to see if anyone could help me find a term for a certain type of base class I am trying to create - in essence a lightly-armoured, dextrous fighter. The thing is is that I want a name that is acultural, or at least doesnt have a lot of connentations with certain things.

I could use the term 'swashbuckler', but that is associated with pirates, et al.

I could use the term 'duelist', but that makes one think of two-weapon fighters with rapiers/daggers, etc. Although it's close with this term.

I could use Unfettered, but Monte might get angry :p

So, can anyone help with my dilemma? Thanks :)

Fencer. They don't wear armor and use only a single weapon.

Though I think your connotations are off with the "Dualist" implying two weapons.

Fencer is another one Ive considered (the archaic meaning of it and I actually also mean to put that in the OP) but it's not exactly what I'm looking for, I guess. Nice one though :)

As for Duelists, I was under the impression that there were several fighting schools teaching differnet styles, oftentimes with two weapons. Hungary used Short Sabres, IIRC, Italians Used rapiers and something else, etc. I could be wrong though....

Just realized that I spelled it DUAList, but the meaning of the word is simply one who duels. Duels can be fought with literally any weapon, including guns, maces and giant robots. Some dueling styles, yes do involve fighting with two weapons, but it's not an absolute association.

Perhaps if you expanded on the characteristics of the word you are looking for?

I wonder, though, if there might not be an etymological relationship between duel and dual. In my mind, a duel includes only two adversaries. If the character archetype in question specializes in fighting only one opponent at a time, I think that this is the perfect name. Otherwise, I may need to consider it some more.

Absolutely, Arbiter. "Duel" is originally coming from duellum, which is a bastardization of the latin bellum, war. It's literally "war between two people to settle a personal quarrel".

Dual, on the other hand, comes directly from the latin "dualis", from "duo", two.

Brought to you by dictionary.com :

Synonyms for Swashbuckler (meaning adventurer)

charlatan, daredevil, entrepreneur, explorer, fortune-hunter, gambler, globetrotter, hero, heroine, knight, madcap, mercenary, opportunist, pioneer, pirate, rogue, romantic, soldier, speculator, stunt man, traveler, venturer, voyager, wanderer.

I'd go with daredevil. But madcap is cool, too. :)

Heavy horses are termed Destriers (spelling?), and I believe light horses were termed Coursers or something like that? I am not entirely sure without a dictionary handy to double check, but the terms could be applied to your class/variant.
