I am attempting to convert my most beloved 2nd Ed character to 3.0/3.5. He is a 10th level fighter that used the Swashbuckler kit from the Fighter's handbook. I know there has been a lot of discussions about the lightly armored fighter and what is available in classes or prestige classes. The classes/PrCs I am considering (whether combining them or whatever) are Fighter, Unfettered from AU, Swashbuckler from Complete Warrior, and Duelist. I would love to hear combination suggestions and opinions of the stated classes as well as anything else I should consider that I am not aware of. Please help!!!

Converting over is not easy, so be ready to lose and gain abilities at the drop of a hat. Why don't you post some of the abilities of your 2nd ed character so that way we can see what you are trying to achieve/match-up.

I have been told that AU stuff does not "add-up" right with standard 3.5/3.0 stuff, so you might want to stick to "the core books". Again, that's what i have heard...i do not use AU at all.

If it's a character like you really don't want to change, I suggest listing the abilities and traits that ar a must have. That way when the conversation goes on, you can make sure that those abilities are somehow included.

I appreciate the feedback so far and will post more on his traits and attributes, I just don't have time this morning. Please check back this afternoon. Thanks!!!

Here's a little background:

This was a two person campaign. The two characters involved are and have been best friends since birth. My character is the heir to the throne of an island nation. When they were 16 they decided (ok, my character decided to and his friend had no choice but to come and protect him) to run away because my character did not want to live up to his responsibilities. He is a pretty boy but not a dandy. He is all about the ladies, however he has found his true love he just really doesn't realize it. He is tall and handsome (6'3" blond hair, blue eyes). He is very happy-go-lucky and always has a smile (for the ladies...and the law when he needs to). He was trained to be a fighter and a dueler at home and he uses and has always used Rapier/Main-Gauche in two-weapon style. He constantly parried with the MG when in combat (we always used the rules in the fighter's handbook for parry I believe). He also used throwing daggers/stilettos extensively. He fought like a fighter, but his Non-Weapon Proficiencies were very "rogueish". He used Tumbling (to get bonus to AC), Etiquette, Disguise, Juggling (used the ability to get a higher rate of fire on throwing) and Appraising extensively (many of those were kit bonuses). Here are his stats:
Str- 18/70, Dex-17, Con-15, Int- 14, Wis 10, Cha- 16
I can't remember if we rolled or the DM adjusted or whatever.

Ouch. I'd go with Ftr levels for all the neccessary feats (TWF, ITWF, G TWF at level 11, TWD and the upgrades as well as prolly Weapon Focus and Spec Rapier and Improved Critical...). Combat Expertise and Improved Feint look stylish. Point Blank Shot for throwing and probably Quickdraw. Think about Flick of the Wrist for extra fun.

Gosh. Go Ftr/Rog or have a look at the Brigand class in the Kalamar Players guide (this class is included in the 3.5 update sheets available for download). You'll have less feats but some Charisma related abilities.

Stats... weow. I'd say Str 18, Dex 18 (level raises included), Con 15 or 16, Int 14 looks good, Wis 10 and Cha 16 are ok.

Some levels of duelist wouldnt be bad. The only ability that you couldnt use while TWF is precise strike. So 3 or 4 levels could be useful. However that does depend on if you want to wear armor or not. One of the primary benefits of duelist is Int bonus to AC while wearing no armor. However with your Int it might be better to wear mithril chain or some other light armor. If you go with armor some of the duelist abilties might still be useful but it may not be worth it to go in the class. 3 levels of swashbuckler is a fairly good prefix for anything you do end up using. You get ok skills, weapon finesse and insightful strike. After that I don't know. Some mix of rogue and fighter mabye? I don't have AU so I don't know how Unfettered might fit in.

Hmm swashbuckler levels for more damage with Int... then some ftr/rog, later duelist, not for armour but Precise strike (as often as it's worth it).

Main advantage of the duelist class IMHO is elaborate parry later.
