Need Help with Cost of Magic Ring

Now, kreynolds, you're being just a tad argumentative.

He's always like that. I blame Texas. ;) Just ignore his language and read his points. He's got a good understanding of the rules, he can just off as condescending or arrogant sometimes. He doesn't mean to, though. Like I said, I blame Texas. :p

Where have I used questionable language? I've been nothing but civil this entire time.

So because I defend myself in a discussion I am arrogant? That was uncalled for.

It's the tone, not the words. Hey, it's your keyboard - write what you will.

So are there limits to non-epic items? What are they? You have decried my theories, but presented none in return. Forgive my tone, but it is time to "put up or shut up", for lack of a better turn of phrase. :)

You're not doing it on purpose. That's kinda my point. Whenever you post, I seem to read some frustration or exasperation in your words. Like mkletch says, its your tone. Not the tone your writing with, but the one that I read out of it. It happens whenever I read one of your posts. Seriously. Every time. I've read enough of them to be able to ignore it, but I've also read enough of them to know I'm not the only one (I usually lurk on this board).

This isn't intended as an attack or anything. Just an observation of people's general reaction to your posts. I mean, don't you think people (newbies especially) yell at you a lot for no reason at all (or so you feel)?

You blame WHAT?!

1. Not-Sean's not nearly as bad as he used to be. In recent months, he's cleaned up his act real nice. Heck, he even pulled me into a flame war once, mebbe a year ago. (Remember that "wand of permanence", Not-Sean? :D

2. THERE AIN'T NUTHIN' WRONG WITH TEXAS, you ill-mannered yankee pinhead! :p There are several perfectly respectable posters to this board from the Lone Star State. Some that come to mind include Jeremy, James McMurray, and, of course, myself. (I apologize for not remembering more of ya'll fellow Texans... feel free to contribute to the thread!)

Not at all. I actually haven't been yelled at in weeks. I've been getting along with newbies quite well, truth be told. The only posters I have the occassional trouble with are veterans with a good memory that use my past behavior to justify their actions today, or that don't even notice I'm being nice now.

I will not take the blame for someone elses behavior when I never instigated it, and I can't apologize for something I didn't do.

The implied maximums come from Monte, SKR and others. Before the Epic book, there was nothing that said you could not pop out a Belt of Strength +10, or a Ring of Hide +25...

This is false. From the ever-lovin' SRD (and the DMG is nearly identical, I believe):

Many magic items offer a bonus on attack rolls, damage rolls, saving throws, Armor Class, ability scores, or skill checks. Most items that add to saving throws, attack rolls, damage rolls, or AC are restricted to a maximum bonus of +5. (Bracers of armor are an exception.) Most items that add to ability scores are restricted to a maximum bonus of +6, and the bonus usually comes in multiples of 2 (+2, +4, or +6). Skill check bonuses do not have a maximum.

So ability bonuses are indeed limited to +6. Skill bonuses were not limited until ELH, when they decided on +30.

This is not just a hindsight comment by a few designers. This is in the rule books.

Yup. It's on page 176 of the DMG, right column, first paragraph. Thanks for finding that, Corwin.
