If you like classical music for backgrounds, try Amazon's 99 series of MP3s - my favorite is [ame=http://www.amazon.com/99-Darkest-Pieces-Classical-Music/dp/B0048NUUS2/ref=sr_shvl_album_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1308554375&sr=301-1]99 Darkest Pieces of Classical Music[/ame] - not just for horror scenes, for example I used Danse Macabre as the background for a dogfight between flying machines.

Holst's The Planets has some that are very good - Mars, good for battles; Saturn, good for Aboleths; Neptune for magical.... Many will seem familiar from various films. I am fond of the versions by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

The Auld Grump

I have a playlist of gaming music that numbers in the thousands - so much in fact that I haven't been able to sort through it all to divide it into various categories that I might find of use. The vast majority of it is RPG videogame soundtracks, so my advice would be to start with your favorite videogames and go from there. You'll have so much music that you won't know what to do with it all.

Soundtracks in general are a good bet, if you go with instrumental ones (often sold as "original score" albums rather than "original soundtrack"). Movie soundtracks can be easily recognized, if they're recent or iconic, but that's not always a bad thing. I played the music from the scene in Star Wars (Episode IV, A New Hope), at the end, when they're getting their medals and the rebel fighters all cheer and clap, over one scene when my players were getting similar awards- and it really enhanced the scene for everybody. Nobody cared that it was from the movie, or if they did, then it made the experience better. :)

So, try 'em, you'll probably like 'em. And if you check out some relatively obscure movies like Dark City, or the Da Vinci Code, you can often find really great music that not everybody in your group will be likely to recognize- if recognition is really a problem for you.

"The Ecstasy of Gold" would be a great Gunslinger theme, as would most anything from the Red Dead Redemption soundtrack (or any western soundtrack). A good song for fighters would be "This Day we Fight" by Megadeth, if you're into fast paced metal tunes. For wizards I have to recommend "The Wizard" by Black Sabbath just because the title works, and the lyrics are a good fit too. Those are just some of my offhand thoughts.

Philip Glass' string quartets could be good for certain occasions.

Aphex Twin's "Selected Ambient Works Vol.II" is a good choice: a lot of variety, from the happy/cheery to the downright creepy.

I've become rather fond of instrumental tracks from movies. Lord of the Rings may be a little too obvious (and Enya may put your players to sleep). Sometimes obscure videogame music can be handy (other times just annoying - avoid the JRPG Lunar series). Stuff from Zelda (especially anything from the N64 on) can be great, especially from Twilight Princess. Final Fantasy soundtracks (especially orchestra versions) are really good.

One thing that may be worth looking into is folk-esq music. Korpiklaani is a favorite folk-metal band of mine. I can even think of some uses for Irish Rovers or good old-fashion polka.
