Need help with Sunder

Elocin

Lurker (sort of)
I know this has been posted before but I can not search and I am at work and unable to browse through the acrhives.

I am gaming tonight and I have mispalced my PHB and need to figure out how the "Sunder" line of feats work. My characters will be going up against some Hook Horrors and they have the Improved Sunder Feat. Now how does the mechanics actually work on this?

Can someone help me out on this?

Ok, on a Sunder the attacker rols to attack, and the defender rolls an Attack. if the Attacker rolls higher (counting all normal bonuses for both) the attacker hits the weapon and does damage to it.

All items have a Hardness. Hardness is like DR for items. THat much damage is ignored. Any damage over that is applied to the HPs of the item. Magical bonuses add to hardness and HP of the item.

do the same rules apply to monsters as to weapon vs weapons sunder.....

i mean you cant sunder a +2 weapon with a +1 so how can a monster sunder a pc's weapon without dr of some kind?

Sunder

Ok to see if I have this straight let me go through an example.

(all numbers here are assumptions.)

Hook Horrow +13 melee, Normal Claws
Fighter +13 melee, Keen Bastard Sword +4

Normal hardness of Sword being 10 and say 30 HP's
Magical Sword would be Hardness 14 and 34 HP's?

Now does the Hook Horror have to attack and hit first and then the Hook Horror and Fighter make apposed rolls tosee if weapon is sundered or does the Hook Horror just atempt to Sunder?

This sounds right but I could be talking out of my rear end.

Thank you for the help on this.

Oops, forgot one point. You need an enchantment bonus equal to or higher then the weapon you are attacking. For monsters they need a DR (the +x part) equal to or higher then the weapon they are attacking.

Sunder

OK, was wondering about the DR part since I thought the monster's DR had to equal or beat the Enchantment of the weapon. Which then makes the Hook Horror rather silly since they do not have any DR what so ever. They are classed as a CR 6 creature with the Improved Sunder Feat? Ummm, does this make any sense to anyone? Since I will be having 4 of them go up against level 13 characters I guess I will add a template to them as well to get the DR, possibly Fiendish or some such. Fun fun more work for me.

Thank you again.

You might be able to have a spellcaster cast Stoneskin on one of them, giving it a Damage Reduction... :) Or, have a twisted druid cast Greater Magic Fang on them.

If it's a +4 weapon, that's gotta be some naaasty template.

unless house ruled, stoneskin does not help in that regard. [it won't let creatures/pc's w/o DR to affect creatures with ... or affect items that are about to be stricken]

I like the idea of the dark druid though ... or give the beasties some magical tatoo's that they can use (like psionic tatoo's)
