D&D 3E/3.5 Need ideas on converting my 3.0 character over to 3.5...

Personally I would take the high road ;)

Celestial gnome paly 3/wizard(illusionist) 3 (or sorc) and then level X in a custom made prestige class that you and your dm work out that makes you a paladin/wizard(illusionist) or sorc and gets you closer to where you want the character to go.

Possibly even Celestial gnome paly2/illusionist 3/Divine Fallacy X (gotta love it..lol.. paladins are called lawful stupid after all.. but not to their face)

It seems like the best option to me to keep your character as close as possible while making it more like how you wanted it anyway. It will work!

Simply start with Bard (Neutral good) then turn paladin and become Ex-bard... you don't lose anything but can't get more bard levels.

I know you said you're trying to stick with the rules, but I think an exception could be made in this case. If you want to keep your 6 levels of paladin, you're going to be stuck with an exp penalty. Either house rule it to make illusionist your favored class or make him a paladin 5/ illusionist 4. I'm sure your character isn't the only one to get hosed by the conversion to 3.5. It's just easier for everyone and more fun for you to keep illusionist as yur favored class.

I agree with the rest: In this case, you should just ask your DM to keep the old favoured class. It is a small change, but one that can screw up your character big time. While I'm wholly for other changes, like taking the new harm even though your character relied heavily on the old one, this one was done with the intention to give the gnomes more bang for their buck, so you shouldn't be punished for it. For any new gnome, the FC should be bard, but existing ones should get the choice.
