Need interesting Underdark merchants!

Chaldfont

First Post
My campaign is taking the PCs to a vast Underdark trading city. They need some time for R&R and shopping. So I need some underdark merchants they will never forget.

I'm already adapting an excellent story from NPR about a crazy Ramen shop in Tokyo named Ramen Jiro. My version will feature a fat kuo-toan serving up cranium rat-brain ramen.

Any other suggestions?

I used an arcane with illusion to appear human named Kasim. he's a magic item seller. He talks and acts like joe pesci in lethal weapon 4. It was a memorable npc.

"ok ok ok, how about you give me a deposit and I'lls find out if that's possible?"

How a bone artist who sales his owns wares; household items constructed of bone to make those Drow homes beautiful. Bone lamps, Bone chairs, Bone tooth picks and even bone baby rattles. Perhaps he decorates his own hair with bones.

I first thought about as a spider parts merchant, but that would probably get him spanked by his peers.

How about a merchant that deals in rare underground plants, etc, like fungi and lichens... The plants could have strange powers and effects. (no pun intended)

Hehe, when you said "spider parts merchant", I immediately associated that with "auto parts". That lead to the idea of undead or construct spiders that people use as transportation.

Yes! I love brainstorming!

A taxidermist with various stuffed and mounted underdark creatures. Is always willing to hire groups to bring in something unique, or maybe a special request (umber hulk, anyone?)

Could also be a great source of information on the ecology of various creatures, but if he's really busy, he might make the pc's work in his shop in exchange for the info - imagine the burly barbarian holding up the stinking choker corpse while the taxidermist positions it "just so"...

I reccomend a disguised mind flayer that reads the minds of the PCs before they can speak to help in haggling.

A rakshasa weapons dealer (similar to our modern day types). He can get you anything you want, for the right price - just don't ever try to cross him.

I have something really useful for you. Beginning on the very bottom of page 15 in my campaign's brainstorming thread, I asked for the exact same thing. Some of the responses were amazing. Ideas started on page 16, and the ones I used are summarized halfway down page 23. there's some amazing creativity in there that might help you.
