I already tried this one in general forum but didn't get really the response I was looking for.

Basically, I'm getting dnd books for christmas for the first time, and I would like to know what to get.

I have all core books, and WOTC supplements like S@F, DOTF, etc.

Mof didn't seem that interesting to me, too powergamey.

I've heard the quintessental books are good, which ones would you recommend? It said preorder for rogues and fighters, are those not out yet?

Also, I was wondering if Encyclopaedia Arcane books were 3e?

Any advnice you guys could help me with would be nice, and time is running out!!

If you want a totally biased answer, my Sprawling Shadows, Weapons: Book of Swords vol. 1 will be out this weekend on www.rpgnow.com. It's only $0.99, and you get 24 new magical swords, fully illustrated. Makes a great e-stocking stuffer!

Well, what type of books do you like?

The Quint books are all pretty good, but do offer new rules that some people don't like. Monk, Rogue, and Wizard seem to be the best out of those. The Arcana series is also good, but really focuses on one thing. For instance Constructs is excellent but unless you are really going to need rules for customizing constructs, it might not be for you.

If you want a great city book, Bluffside is the best. If you want a whole campaign world based on celtic fantasy, then Slaine is for you. If you need a full panthion filled with gods, creation mytths, churches, and great things like that Book of the Rightious is what is called for.

There is a lot of stuff out there, good and bad. Do you want hardback, softback, pdf's?

I like new skills, feats, and ways of doing things. not a big prc man. And I'd like softback or hardback, unless its a really good pdf.

Well, most books you are going to get new prestige classes. THe Quintessential books do have a lot of other material in them besides prestige classes, so you might try a few of them out.

I bought a couple of the Quint. books (Psiwarrior and Rogue). I like them an will be getting more after christmas.

Another book that I really like is Relics and Rituals.

You might also check out the great reviews on these boards. I've been able to review a few truely great books, and that place never lacks for an opinion.

Hello, Stalker0... :)

Are you a player or do you also DM sometimes?
And which are your favorite classes/races to play?

I suppose you are mostly a player, since you say you like skills, feats, and ways of doing things. The quintessential books are quite good, there's lots of stuff but not extraordinary. If you play arcane spellcasters, I definitely suggest one of the Encyclopaedia Arcane: they have great ideas for different characters, not many feats but surely new "way of doing things". Just pick up the one that sounds you more attractive, but be prepared because they are tough to use, and sometimes they present spellcasting rules that are significantly different from standard.

If you are a DM, I would really suggest you Manual of the Planes if you don't already have it. I admit I haven't used it yet in my campaign (after all, planar travel is supposed to be high-level) but this book was simply a pleasure to read for me. Another great addition would be Traps & Treachery, if you like setting up good exploration part of the story.

I like the crunchy magic items (with tons of story/background) in the Arcanis book, Forged in Magic.

Also, the Monster Manual II, Epic Level Handbook, and the Manual of the Planes are always good things to have as well, if you don't already have those (and I don't think you do).

Anyway, you must be somewhat lucky to start getting those from parents; mine will probably never buy me any D&D books, though I have gotten them to give me Star Wars RPG books before. Then again, the next d&d book I'm trying to resist, but can't very well, buying is the Book of Vile Darkness; there's not a large chance of my parents even considering that one.
