Need some help with dlls

A friend of mine bought a really old computer for his 4-year-old son. Trouble is, being a kid, his son liked playing with the buttons. The kid broke the installation CD for the Windows 98 SE. So anyway, when he boots up the computer, it's asking for files from the PRECOPY.CAB (or was it PRECOPY2.CAB?) out of the DRIVER11.CAB file. Since there's no CD, we can't do anything about it. And even if we could find a CD, apparently one of the missing files operates the CD drive, so it's a moot point anyway.

However, of the fifteen dlls, drvs, rscs, and vxds, I've managed to locate and download seven of what I believe are the correct files. (*knock on wood* hopefully not downloading viruses :) )

I've managed to find the following:
ati_d3d.dll
ati_dd16.dll
ati_dd32.dll
ati_hal.dll
ati_vpe.dll
ati_m64.drv
ati_m64.vxd

The files that I can't seem to locate (I swear I've found dll archive ftp sites before, when my own computer was on the fritz) are:
ati_tv.dll
aticwdde.dll
atidev.dll
atidil.dll
atihal64.dll
atiht.dll
atipita.dll
atidvenu.rsc

Any help with finding these would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Since all those dll names start with "ati", I would guess that they belong to an ATI video card. Maybe you should check out their site and see if they have driver downloads for the model of card that's in that PC.

So it's probably the video drivers I'm finding? That means I probably won't be any help in getting the CD-ROM to work... Well, he DID buy the computer so that it'd be cheap to replace if his kid broke it. :)

What I find funny is that he thinks I know enough about computers to help him. :) I can't even keep my computer up for five minutes, some days. Of course, I'm using Windows ME, so that may be the big problem....

Latest trouble with my computer is that the sound card is dying on me. Which sucks, because my DVD-ROM is the only thing I have to play DVDs with. Maybe there's some way to hook in earphones, I have some decent ones someplace...

And this is after they had to replace the hard drive and a few other components. Argh, I hate travelling an hour to the repair center, then going without a computer for several weeks... As it is, the USB (??) port for my printer is broken (printer end), so I'm using a slow serial port...

If I had money, I'd buy a new computer, but then I'd end up with Windows XP, and I've not heard of good things about that yet.

You can try using the headphone jack on the front of your DVD-ROM. However, I would suggest getting a new sound card. I'd suggest a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz. I think they retail for $60, great buy and it will last you forever.

I wouldn't worry about using Parallel port over USB. Unless you got a NICE printer with a huge amount of memory you will keep it just as full with Parallel as you will with USB. Plus it frees up a USB port on your computer.

What is wrong with XP? It's stable as hell. The Home edition has some problems with security, things like the Admin password is set to default on all copies among some other problems. Beyond that, it works just fine and you can turn the Luna theme off :)

I am wary of anything new from Microsoft. 'nuf said. :)

As for buying stuff for the computer, when I get a steady job again, I'll upgrade to a new computer, and ship this one off to my sister. It's her turn to get my cast off. :)

CD Rom drivers are normally on a system restore floppy disk. I'm assuming he didn't make one, but anybody with windows 98 can make one that he can use to get the CD Rom drive up and working. I'm no expert or computer wiz and its been a while since I messed with 98 but I'm pretty sure that would work to get the CD Rom drivers.
