Need some ideas to flesh-out a one-shot

On the other hand, why would you want to run an venerable-aged, all-dwarf game anyways? It sounds interesting, but something must be tugging at your imagination. I would suggest exploring what you want out of the game and developing the rest from there. Then go back after outlining the world to rationalize its setup.

It's a one-shot, so I won't be doing too much world-building outside of the settlement and scenerio. I'm not sure what the inspiration was, exactly; I've been wanting to run a one-shot with all of the PCs of the same race, and for some reason for the dwarf scenerio, I pictured grizzled crochety old dwarves. :)

I like the idea of mandatory fighter levels to compensate for old age penalties. Mandatory dwarf levels (from Races of Stone) would work better; they don't have caster levels.

Select adventure scenarios that showcase dwarveness, such as giants, (leveled) orks & goblins as adversaries, a long trek through unstable underground complexes, having to overcome poisonous encounters and obstacles (which would include a drinking contest :) ), knowledge of ancient dwarven lore to overcome a problem solving scenario, endurance tests (you need to travel through very cold/very hot expanses, hold your breath for an extended time, run a long distance, etc.)

I'm really stuck trying to think of why it would have to be the old-timer dwarves that need to save the day, however.

Two words: "Durin's Bane."

Nobody else in the clan has the knowledge of the old ways necessary to slay such an ancient enemy!
