Need some input on my artifact here

Nightfall

Sage of the Scarred Lands
This is something I created for my own interest but I'd like some feedback on it as well. Here it is. [Editor's note, changed some of it's extraordinary powers to make it a little LESS powerful]

The Legend of Mortis

The history of Mortis actually came before the founding of Hollowfaust. When the city of Sumara was still a thriving metropolis, the satrap and the Council maintained a standing order of bodyguards to help in the protection of the city. The head of this noble body wielded a fairly potent blade. It's name has been lost since but many such tales talk of the guard always being able to defend the ruling body and their city when necessary, and often against great odds. When Mount Chalesh erupted, the blade and it's wielder were considered to have vanished into the dust of the city. That was until the day that Carythlla and her apprentices found it, the desiccated hand still clutching the blade. They saw potential and Carythlla knew that this blade should go to her lover, since he was one of the few warriors capable of aiding in the defense of Hollowfaust. Mortis became the favored weapon of Sarrant, wielding it soon after it had been enhanced and altered to suit the Anatomist's Guild's needs as well as that of Hollowfaust. Sarrant also found the blade possessed many of the same qualities that he came to adore in it's maker, his lover and spiritual counterpart, Carythlla. She had asked one other, an journeyman necromancer to aid her it's making, since he was also one that helped to find the blade. He in turn imbued Mortis with it's special purpose, to defend the city of Hollowfaust from invaders. Sarrant used the blade well, and few could match either his swordsmanship nor his blade, as many sutak and other threats fell to Mortis' edge. Finally, when Carythlla passed away, he decreed that the blade should choose it wielder, as it was fitting that the blade would aid other of the Unfailing. While a few of those have held it, Mortis apparently has found the new breed lacking for some reason. Thus it has not found much use of late. But always, it is kept and hoped that some day, someone else will wield the blade in defense of Hollowfaust.

Mortis looks like and acts maleficent blade but it also has other properties, ghost touch, shocking, defending, wounding +5 bastard sword As part of it's extrodinary abilities, it grants the wielder regeneration 2, can detect undead and detect evil at will, and once per day can cast the following spells: Bull's Strength, Cat's Grace, Endurance, Nethergaze, and Control Undead. These spells are considered to be cast by a 20th level sorcerer for purposes of dispelling and other effects. It's also an intelligent blade (Wis: 19 Int: 16 Cha: 14 Ego: 28) It's alignment is Neutral Good. It also can suppress it powers if it feels the wielder isn't worthy to hold it. It's a very exacting sword, and will probe deeply to see if the wielder is truly committed to the common good of the people and to the Council. It's special purpose: to defend Hollowfaust from all invaders and enemies, both inside and out of it. It's special ability is Sunburst, centered on the caster.

Balance isn't really an issue for artifacts, but it certainly is rather powerful.

I don't like it. It's not thematic. It's powers aren't Hollowfaust-y. Make them more related to necromancy.

This artifact does not get the Anabstercorian Seal of Game-A-Delic Approval.[/u]

Well thank you very much. I was trying though for a PARTICULAR Hollowfaust feel in terms of this would be a blade that Sarrent, the original Unfailing would have carried with him into battle. Especially since his lover Carythalla was head of the Anatomist Guild, thus she's be concerned about health and well being as well as fighting prowess. Do you think though I should maybe change the spells that is uses per day? *is open to changing that*

Hey Nightfall I just got Hallowfaust last night, so Ive only got a minor feel for the setting, But what I skimmed, it seems like your conection ti military prowess and health is good. I would make them 1/day abilities only if this was a minor artifact, if its a major then you should keep it as it is in my oppinion.

Well I kind of want this to be a minor artifact, so maybe I will change that. I'm glad though Valicor you like it.

Don't own the setting, so how old is it? If its over 500 years of age and of renown then it would be a major artifact under 300 years of age minor, inbetween your call but I'd base it on setting info.

Themeaticly.... where does Shocking come in? Might I suggest "Sonic" damage instead.... picture a screaming blade or moaning. Works better for me than a very necromantic seeming item crackling electrical sparks.

Owls Wisdom to bolster the will of the wilder vs those sorts of attacks might be beneficial.

Just some input... hopefully useful. I know it gets lonely down here in house rules.

Interesting you ask Limper. I have gotten some input from the folks/friends at the Scarred Lands offical board. After discussing it with them I'm considering altering the history slight, thus making it older. Sumara was found roughly 400 years BEFORE Hollowfaust, (Hollowfaust was founded on the ruins of Sumara when the volcano near it blew up), but I believe Hollowfaust itself is only 150 years so old. So I'm guess it would make the blade around 400-500 years old.

I'd love to use Owl's Wisdom...but two things. 1. It's probably not something either the Sumaran or Carythlla would have stressed SINCE they focused a great deal on the PHYSICAL side of life. 2. I'm trying to keep the blade OGL compliant. I can use the R&R equliant, but again don't see the need. As for shocking, It's not QUITE necromantic as much as it was forged before the founding of Sumara and thus would have more powers BEFORE Carthylla imbued them with other abilities. I do think this is something that the Sumaran would have used, especially the captain of the elite city guard would have worn to protect the Satrap, the Council, and the city of Sumara.

Might the Blade have had a hand in the Founding of the city? Since its intellegent give it some statecraft skills to reflects its Purpose, that the City of its building flourishes.

A city founded by sound advice from a sword.

Since its an artifact rather than a lesser item try empowered buff spells.... makes em more special (and likely to be useful to a high level wielder.)

No because it came AFTER the first refugees had already made themselves at home and AFTER the First seige. (Hollowfaust has been seiged four times.)

It's intelligent but it doesn't determine policy. It's more interested in FOLLOWING the rules, which may seem odd but it believes in an orderly society that has it's growth in both law and death.
