Ok, so I'm at this point in my campaign where I need to tie a bunch of stuff together, and I'm looking for some ideas.
A lot of my campaign is centered around the MonkeyGod modules Black Ice Well, and Hellstone Deep. So, if you're familiar with those, so much the better, but here goes:
A long time ago there was this god of chaos who build a device that could kill creatures a single blast, essentially. A big war occurred between gods, and the god of chaos, along with a god of law were both destroyed. A celestial came down, and destroyed the device (a gem) and shattered the remains.
During this time, a group of demons said "screw you, we're leaving" and abandoned the god of chaos. After the god died, a large body of his blood was culled from his corpse, and they collected it in their fortress, and mined it for power and necromantic magic. The blood corrupted them, though, and at away at the landscape. A wizard fled the fortress with a key, only to be killed in an inhospitable wasteland away from the confines of the fortress.
Fast forward 200,000 years. A vampire kills a mortal who found the key, and now he has it. He has an army of vampires of his own, and seeks to enter the fortress and claim the blood for himself. Only, there are all these slaad trying to get into it as well, but they can't since they don't have the key. And there are slaad all over the place, "looking for sources of power". The PCs have fought them on occasion, but don't know why they are here in this land.
Enter another dimension - a powerful demon who wishes to reassemble the gem that the ancient god of chaos used. If he can reassemble it, he'll be all-powerful. Just one problem - it's scattered all over the land. So, he gets slaad to go all over the land and find the shards for him.
This is where I'm struggling. The slaad could work for the demon and agree to find the shards for him, but they'd want something in return. I'm thinking the demon could convince the slaad that he knows a way into the fortress (a lie) and can get them into it (another lie) if they retrieve all the shards for him. Problem is, once they acquire all the shards, they're going to want their payment from the demon, and he's not going to be able to deliver it. Unless... he gives the vampire the information about what the key is used for, since he might not otherwise be able to figure it out on his own, and then sends the vampire into the fortress (who conveniently destroys many of the slaad in the process) eliminating them for the demon, who doesn't care for them anymore than the next guy does.
Hey, you know I think I might have just solved my own problem.
Well, there are other factors at play that I still need to work in. Like, the mortal the had the key was the first explorer to this lost continent the PCs are on, and I haven't yet decided what his status is. And, whether or not the demon would want access to this blood as well. Perhaps he believes he can go in there and take some once the vampire and the slaad all kill each other?
Well, any other interesting ideas anyone has, I'll certainly take 'em. I'd also like to have some nice divination prophecies, since the players might start tossing off divinations to find out "why the slaad are here", and "what's in the fortress", etc. I'm not very good at coming up with good answers that are less-than-obvious on the spot.
