Anything wrong with some type of illusion,
Programmed Image, Permanent Image or if you want the bbeg somewhere close to hand, Project Image.
All of these are fairly high level, but if it is against 15th level characters, should not be a problem. All this being said, if the group do not want to participate in being an audience, you will have to have other means at the ready for subduing them.

Enthrall is a good choice, but against PCs (since it requires a Will Save) it will most likely be interpereted as him trying to hold them until he powers up and kills them or something.
