Need to come up with a name for a new race...

Hmmm... still not one that shouts out at me yet, although the Vash, Qee and those pantheon.org names are definitely possible.

I'm not writing up the story hour accounts where they start appearing yet, so we've got a little time to figure it out. But the idea of them being individually named Vash'Mathilou or thereabouts (perhaps Vash' as a prefix to the name - sort of like a house or clan name) - but a universal race name is still pretty elusive.

And yeah, perhaps a Q or K would be a little hard to pronounce underwater.

Not too sure...

I would expect their language to be closer to clicks, pops and squeels like most underwater mammals (whales, dolphins, porpoises). These are sounds that carry furthest underwater.

Although I introduced the race into the campaign before the movie came out, i imagine the language of the species to be something close to the Genosians (from the film... you know, the one with the hero called Jango) clicks, burrs and er... raspberries - although a lot more fluid.

You are definately right about clicks though. I thought the clicks could represent a more aggressive tone of voice and the pops and hums more pleasant (the race isn't naturally aggressive, they've been forced to attack due to Saughin destroying ships and creating a embargo around the Scardale castle which the campaign takes place at the moment).

On a side note, i did create a race of aquatic goblins (to give the players a reason not to just think "goblins") that appeared much earlier in the campaign: and they clicked, squealed and gargled. So i suppose I was on the right track then.

On a second side note - [commence blatant plug] the aforementioned aquatic goblins have just made they're presence felt in the most recent of Ice, Luck and Honour's story chapters, Chapter 5: The Eight Blades of Talagbar [end blatant plug].

Anyway, thats my piece and thanks for the help. And as always, all ideas are appreciated so keep them coming...

I tried to post my suggestion a couple days ago, but I wasn't allowed to post....

Anyway, how about Coelocasi (pronounced see-loh-KAH-see)??

Yes, it's derived from those prehistoric fish called Coelocanths.

Thanks for the replies,

how about Coelocasi (pronounced see-loh-KAH-see)?
That is a good name. Okay, that means a few things have switched round (including morphing most Q's and K's into something else)... so:

Race name: Coelocasi
Individual name possibilities: Vash'Mathilou, Vashdrenn, Vasht'iss and Apam-Natat (which i think will be some kind of regal name, or at least hold some sort of social power).

and also...
Nemoali (plural), Nemoal (singular)
as the race name for the water goblins... although thats what people refer to them as - not sure about what they would call themselves...

Once again, thanks for the help - its made me think about the race a little more seriously than just a mild aggravation for the characters... if you wan't to see the Coelocasi in action, then I'll revive this thread when they appear in the chapters (a few weeks at least) so you can check on what you've all helped me create. The Story Hour link is below if you're interested to see what sort of world this race will be running amok in...

Thanks again,
