Nether Scrolls

I just picked up Lost Empires of Faerun, and my power-hungry mad maniac of a wizard PC wants to go hunting Nether Scrolls. Is it just me, or is the artifact clumsily worded.

There are two sets of Nether Scrolls, each consisting of 5 chapters a 10 scrolls each. After reading an entire chapter, you gain a benefit. It also says that reading a single scroll raises you one level in an arcane spellcasting class, which takes a month. Does this mean that after 10 months, a player character has levelled 10 times? And then gets his bonus? Or is the meaning of scroll the entire set? Meaning that it takes 50 months and 5 super duper bonuses to gain 1 level?

Either of the options seems rather strange and awkward to me...

It has been said from one of the designer that you gain a level when you read the first single scroll; reading other scrolls gives you only chapter bonuses.

I don't know about the designer's comment but as written, it breaks down like this:

There are five chapters.
Each chapter has ten scrolls (we will call them pages)
When you read wach page, you gain a level.
When you finish a chapter, you get the benefit.
One page takes one month.

I agree with RisnDevil in that is what it says, but DK's solution sounds more reasonable to me, that only 1 level raise is allowed per Nether Scroll set.

The wording in LEoF is unclear, but both Rich Baker and Customer Support told me that it's one level, no matter how many scrolls you get.

Look at the example they give you. It's the one about creation and the special ability about golems. It lists a Cleric 15/Wizard 5 - which would be impossible if you read all 10 scrolls from that area, which would net you 10 arcane levels.

Anyway, since these are artefacts, I say it's ultimately DM's call. If you want to equal 50 scrolls to 50 levels, fine (it would explain how the netherese were so damn powerful).

Oh: and be sure to make it very hard for the Wizard to get those scrolls. Would be a nice final reward at the very end of the campaign ;)
