Networking a XP PC and a WinME PC...

Hi there,

I know the ENWorld gang is a knowledgeable bunch, and I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction, concerning my little problem.

I bought a new computer. I have an old computer (running on Windows ME) that has all my documents. I want to transfer what I have from my old to my new PC (XP Home Ed., SP2).

I'd prefer if I didn't have to install the old harddrive on the new PC. I'm pretty sure there's a way to connect 2 PC's together just for the sake of transferring files.

I have the necessary cable. Both PC's are equipped with an network card. The WinME PC has been networked before (for a little LAN party, some years back). Since I only have one network slot, I have to unplug the cable connected to my modem if I want to connect the 2 computers.

Any help will be appreciated. I'll provide any other info you need.

Thanks in advance!

You should be able to create a Network Setup Disk by going to "My Network Places" and clicking on the "Set up a home or small office network" under Network Tasks on the left side.

I can't remember exactly how it works, but I think it's pretty self-explanatory when you run through it.....

Hope this helps.....

The above poster is correct.

You should be aware that if you are connecting two PCs directly via a network cable without the use of a hub/switch/router then you need to use a specific type of network cable.

This is referred to as a "crossover cable". Any computer store will know what it is by name.

Also, it is going to be a good bit slower to transfer your data over a network cable than it would be to physically connect the old hard drive to the new machine.
