Never Played, could use starting advice

I recently found a copy of Icewind Dale in my house! I totally forgot about this, and have never played.

So, any advice on how to actually start playing? Actually, it is my two sons that are most interested, but I'm sure I'll play too :D

Do you build a party, or run 1 character?
They found the orcs in town, but got shot down by arrows in 2 rounds before they could even scroll and see where the orcs were.

Really, I'm like the Helen Keller leading the blind here.

thanks,

IMO, party, party, party. The real strength with IWD is that you get to create your entire party. This allowed me to use every race as well. It has been at least 4, more like 5, years since I played but this was my party:

Dwarven Fighter
Half-elf Ranger
Human Cleric
Halfling Thief/Fighter
Gnome Cleric/Illustionist
Elven Fighter/Wizard

This combination gave me 4 fighters (the halfling and elf I used predominately as archers), 2 clerics, 2 magic casters, and a thief. I had a lot of fun and could some hurting on the enemy.
