Neverwinter Nights impressions?

What does everyone here think of this game? Seems pretty good so far, though I jut got it recently. Follows third edition rules fairly well for a crpg (considerably watered down though). This game doesn't live up to the hype, but then again I never listen to that and don't let my expectations go up for it.

My hope is that servers here and there will pop up that specialize in role-playing and such. But to be honest, I'm not sure if the NWN interface and system can really support that. Any thoughts or impressions on this game, it's RP-potentila, etc?

Deent game. I like that you can see how the different classes work. I have not finished the first chapter, but have played half of it with all of the classes to see how they work.

The game is too similar to Baldor's Gate IMO, but I have not yet tried the multiplayer. NWN does not seem to bring anything new in terms of feel and adventure to the CRPGs in general. I am still enjoying it
 

Until you discover how easy (frustrating) it is to build your own adventures and run them for your friends or strangers.

Now that is new.

I say easy because you can knock up a map with encounters in a matter of hours.

I say frustrating because the lag is terrible on a 56K Modem, and the scripting doesn't always work and it tends to be unstable.

With a few more patches it should be amazing. At the moment its just good for single player and perhaps LAN play. But if you can get together for a LAN party why not play normal D&D.
 

As for lag when using 56k modem - with just an upgrade to ADSL it runs like a dream even for 6 players and one DM.

I love the game btw. The single player campaign sucks but who cares, it's multiplayer that is this game's appeal. With just a little amount of script-borrowing (HardCore Ruleset) and some creative work by the DM, you're set for a great experience!

Now to add those non-combat skills... I'm planning on adding the Track Feat for Rangers.. Hm.. let's see, I'll need a "tracks" object that you can "use" only if you've got the Track Feat and succeed at Wilderness Lore (new Skill) for DC 10... Hmm...

This is gonna be soo much fun! :cool:
 

As for "the communication problem" I've heard that it can be set up fairly easily for voice communication if you have the right software. I don't, so I guess I'll just have to wait and see if Bioware adds support for it to the game at some point. I think voice would greatly facilitate both communication and role-playing.

At any rate, I'm really enjoying the game. The single player game is much better than most CRPGs (and it's far and away the best I've ever seen out of Bioware). And the multiplayer has great potential. A number of really good mods are in the works as well, and even though it has some issues, the toolset is powerful and user-friendly enough to do great things.

I'm pretty pleased at the moment, and optimistic for the future.
 

Hmm upgrade to ADSL for just another £50 quid a month, £600 quid a year.... hmm if I save the money after a few years I'll be able to set up my own LAN with multiple PC's and invite my friends over. Hopefully the prices will come down.
 

I don't know how the costs work out in other countries, but I'm on a cable modem which I share with a roommate and my landlord via a router. Cost to me: $10 a month. The router cost $105 when I bought it. Recouped that in less than 4 months. Cable's not as fast as some other systems, but it's cheap and readily available (in the States, anyway), and it's fast enough to run multiplayer NWN w/o problems. And it's costing me less than most dial-ups.
 

When I first bought it, I was very very excited. I stopped playing a week ago in Chapter 3 due to overwhelming boredom. The generic environments and scripting make for a very boring game. Its too modular, and I miss the uniqueness and detail that went into the Infinity Engine games.
